Everyone does it different.
« on: Dec 22, 2016, 10:01 AM »
Until I discovered this site I always used manufactured terminal gear i.e eagle claw Lazer sharps with the mono leader already tied on. Well after some humming and hawing I went to tieing my own leaders and hooks. This is the second year with the new gear so hoping it helps. Last year I only fished twice with the new gear so I couldn't tell if it actually matters? What's everyone's thoughts on the matter?

It's easy to snell on a #8 sitting in front of the t.v but out on the ice it may be a little tricky. I noticed also that instead of buying #6 and #4 pre-made I was able to go with #6 and #8 and keep roughly the same hook size. Doesn't make sense but side by side they look the same. Plus using the octopus style hooks helps a little I think

I went to octopus hooks last year towards the end of the season, and my pike hook-up rate increased big time.  It's all I use now.  We can only use dead bait here, so I made a quick strike rig with two octopus hooks and some red wire.  Haven't missed many pike at all since going to that rig.
The next time you think you know it all, try telling someone else's dog what to do.

People still buy those pre-packaged snelled hooks? I haven't seen those things in years. No need to tie a snell just go with a palomar and you're good, unless you use tiny hooks then i just do improved clinch.

I started snelling my own a year ago, haven't noticed an difference in catch rates, but it's more satisfying knowing I assembled what's catching fish!

Just cut the snells from the hooks and tie the hooks directly to your line--- ;)

That's ok. As long as there are signs of improvement

I use light wire true turn hooks and snell them onto whatever line is on my reel.
