no fishing season?
« on: Dec 15, 2006, 05:06 AM »
i was reading one of the topics in the general chat area that was talking about how much it stinks that we're not getting any ice this year, and it got me thinking.  what if we shut down fishing for a couple of years on some of the local lakes, especially those down here in the metro that get pounded all year?  i know it would be rough loosing some of our favorite lakes for a couple of years.  let's take medicine lake, one of my favorites.  there's alotta smaller gills and crappies in the lake, but there's also a few decent ones.  and we're starting to see a decent walleye population.  the problem we're running into as anyone else knows is that as soon as these fish run into a keepable size, they're caught and bucketed.  now imagine if for 3 years those fish were just allowed to grow.  after those 3 years were up it would be like a bonanza.  granted the lake would get pounded like no other, but after 3 years of fishing shut it down for another 3.  just look at upper red.  they shut the walleyes down for a few years and now it's absolutely insane.  granted the closed fishing season was backed by a massive stocking program, but these fish came back from almost nothing in a few short years.  anybody know if there would be any negative impacts to this?  i'm not suggesting shutting down the state of minnesota, just a few select lakes.  input?

you would probably kill your DEQ program, they get a lot of money from fishing licenses
