Gave my portable a bath today!
« on: Dec 01, 2016, 10:51 AM »
I did some research through old threads and found that guys were using a mixture of baking soda, Hydrogen Peroxide, Dish Soap, and warm water with a stiff scrubbing brush to wash the fabric of their shantys. I scrubbed the sled, and inside and out of the fabric then gave it a good long rinse..took about an hour and so far it looks like new! As a side note I've got a Shappell Rover1 and it had never been cleaned or scrubbed in 8 years...smelling fresh, got rid of the mildew and I'm ready for ice! Just thought I'd share if anyone was in the same ice boat as me with a stinky dirty portable

I'm not going to lie....the whole time I was scrubbing I was just wishing I had done a few years back so it wasn't as bad. Having it flipped with a lantern going and breathing in musty mildew air (like last season) wasn't going to happen again though

Actually, I try to keep mine clean, no loose bait or fish.  Keeping those contained helps a lot.    Spilled beverage and snack crumbs have a negative impact.  Gross, in fact. lol

keeping smokers from smoking inside is a must too! it ruins them and fast. never could get the stench out from a buddy who used to smoke in mine and i sold it to a smoker who couldn't smell it.

thanks for the cleaning solvent recipe!

Don't thank me, thank everyone from  all from previous posts!  Just refreshing the topic, I know I'm not the only one. The rover is now drying in the basement, almost like a new 1 man again!

All that including crumbs and wrappers, are the reason for most mice damage..

They smell it, and don't know it's just a wrapper until after they've chewed their way to it...

So true IS.    ;)2

Living 20 miles from civilization & town, this is the location chosen for release of unwanted cats.   GRRR !     :cookoo:

It's amazing ~ one of very few mouse free areas of the planet.      :roflmao:

I can tell you from experience..empty granola bar wrapper was shredded way in the corner of my sled...now every rod etc. will be disenfected. Found traces of mice but they didn't chew through anything. Think I got lucky  :o

Finally broke down and bought a used Genz Trap Pro which was in great shape but really dirty. As it is not insulated I just took the cover off and took it to the laundromat and ran it thru twice. Set it up to dry in the garage for a couple days. Applied some water repellent and let it dry for a couple more days. Looks like new.

My dad, who passed away 2 summers ago, would smoke his pipe in our 2 man.  I can still smell it.  Have to admit its kind of a nice reminder of the guy who always took me fishing with him......

i had to do both of mine, left a bag of grass seed in the shed and the mice had an orgy over everything, thank goodness they only ate the seed and not my canvas. I HATE MICE!
Remember what grandpa would always say. " Where's the beer? and you call yourself a fisherman!"
