Fluoro, Mono, braid, reels and the like...
« on: Dec 11, 2016, 08:01 PM »
Someone set me straight, when to use mono, flouro, braid...and does one pair better with an inline, spinning or closed face reel?  I reel right handed (with my right hand...) and inlines are hard(er) to find for me.  Should I just stick with my schooley?  I'm tired of twisting line and tangles, help!!

Mono is good for all aound fishing, and is what I prefer for pan fish because of how easy it is to work with, it will work with any reel, but has the most memory of the three. it's hard to beat for pan fish less that 30 feet deep. fluorocarbon is a very stiff line that wants to fly off of reel, especially in the cold. But it is almost invisible under ice. I mainly use it as a 3 or 4 foot leader while using braid. braid is what I prefer for walleye and very deep pan fish. it really let's you feel a lot more bites and if you're jig or spoon is not acting like it should or is tangled. it has the least memory and is the most manageable, but if you fish outside a lot in very cold temperatures, it hold water and really ices up the guides and will freeze stiff if you stay jigging one holess for to long. I fish in a shanty so it really isn't an issue for me. i like the fire line crystal because it doesnt soak up very much water. sorry for the long response but hopes this helps.

nothing wrong with a simple schooley, in shallow water.  but if you want no line twist and a modern reel, you better go in line. there are several bait caster type reels for ice fishing on the market.  thats what i would recommend trying.  i love every aspect of using them accept the way the set in rod holders.

as far as line goes, i'm still a mono guy. braid is for tip-ups and floro for leaders.

Dawg I to use right handed reels for ice fishing , I use both in lines and spinning reels , I use fireline fused smoke for eyes and lakers with a copolymer for leader only  (trans optic) , far a floro I'm not a fan stiff and coily ,ok for leaders  also , mono is ok for shallow water pans after that it has to much stretch for deep water IMO
But I fish in a shack so line icing up isn't an issue , I may give gliss a try this winter very small diameter and got some good reports on it , I really had good luck with carbotex but I can't get it any more guys used it here for winter steelheading in the river
But I have buds that use other lines I guess what ever your comfortable with , lots of choices out there for sure

That's a GREAT explanation and VERY helpful, thank you for sharing it.
