Lake Arthur question
« on: Jan 11, 2011, 10:33 AM »
I'm new to this site but very excited to get some tips. If I'm posting in the wrong place, please let me know. My question is this...
I want to take my 10 year old daughter out on Lake Arthur and would like to try to hook some walleye. I'm curious where the good spots are for walleye. I have a topo map and was thinking that the best spot would be in the 30ft water right around the island by the dam. I've had great luck catching wallys there in the summer (usually trolling crankbaits in the shallows right before dawn/dusk) but really don't have a clue where to go on ice. I was thinking about working a jig tipped with a minnow on one pole and some crappie type rigs on the other poles that are stationary. Any tips you guys could give me would be appreciated!!!!!

If we catch some crappie/gills/etc while fishing for walleye, that would be cool too. LMK

After reading most of the Lake Arthur thread, it seems that most people are fishing the muddy creek section of the lake. Most mention that they are catching panfish.

After checking my map, it seems that the deep water between the dam, island, and lakeview beach is a spot where there is a natural bottleneck and deep dropoffs. Also seems like a nice deep hole right between the 422 bridge and barber point.

Do any of you guys fish these areas for walleye? Am I looking in the right place to find that slightly warmer water or am I clueless?

walleye  :o :o :o did you say walleye  ::) ::) ::) in arthur  :'( :'( :'( we are all clueless there are incidental catches rare and far between the walleye are elusive and the deep water and old road beds are where the locals key on deep water is late ice it just froze thick enough the hole you mention is where i would fish its a hike though also the old 422 roadbed out the wardens house also if you get into them lets us know

That's surprizing to me since I have great luck fishing walleye there in the summer. Being a conservation lake, it has always produced big wallys for me with the smallest ones being in the 18-20" range. I'm going to hit the ice by 7am on Saturday between the beach and island. If any of you iceshanty guys want to stop by and chat, I could use some company. I'm gonna give it a try out there and see what happens.

I got on the ice at 7am on saturday...it was a haul to the spot since they closed the lakeview beach access road. I lost one minnow all day and assume it was taken by something small since my stick bobbers never moved.

Ice was pretty solid even out on 30 ft of water. I was really surprised that I didnt catch anything cruising to or from that deep water into the shallows to feed. I had rigs set up from 20 yards off shore all the way out to 30 feet of water thinking that I would cover several depth's at once until they started hitting at a certain depth and I'd start to concentrate my efforts there n drill a few more holes.

I'm determined to catch some walleye on Arthur...I've caught PIGS in that water so I know they are there. i'm going to try the watts bay marina area next time since it's a flat 10-15fow that runs out to 25ft and the easy access to the ice. Let me know if any of you have any walleye success/tips on Arthur and I'll do the same.

Sounds like you are on the right track and in the correct locations.  I do not know of anyone who hooks eyes out there through the ice consistantly.  I'm sure there are people who do, just none who talk about it online.  Stick with it I'm sure you will figure it out.

As far as the bite/dead sea, I do not fish LM though the ice.  The Crappie bite has been steady all year long with some slow days here and there.

Take care and good luck with htose eyes,

Snapper

I must have hit everyone of those slow days since the end of Dec...  :D

No bite for me anywhere. Went to Canonsburg for trout and nothing is biting there either. That place is a guarantee to catch your limit???

I'm not sure if I can make it this Saturday but I'm gonna try Watts Bay. There is a nice flat right between the dock and Barber Point that dropps to 25 fow...looks interesting. Two stream beds converge right there too. I'll make sure I get there at 6 so it's still dark and maybe the early bite will be good.

ive only fished arthur one time, fro sun up to sun down, looking for walleyes and crappie, and fished that island main channel area. 4 guys = 5 perch, 2 channel cats. we thought that would be a good spot for the same reasons you did. ide actually like to try that same spot at night, maybe it would produce better. that was last season and muddy creek was the popular place then too. tight lines...

I'm gonna be off the tip of Nealeys Point...the railroad bed and the old road be intersect right there.

As you walk out on the ice (south) to your right (west/southwest) it drops off like crazy to 24/25 feet from 10 ft. Gonna set up some shiners in the shallow flat there and move to the deep water if nothings happening.

Probably 2 lines shallow (10ft) and 3 lines (1 in 15/20/25ft) going deeper every 10 paces or so.

We'll see. Stop by Saturday morning and help me drill some holes!

I may hit Bear Run Friday afternoon and Saturday-let me know if anyone wants to meet up-I need some fresh air!
I plan to fish the roadbed straight out from the boat launch, mi-section of the finger.
