Pike spearing
« on: Jan 21, 2016, 02:25 PM »
Bought a spear and the stuff for pike spearing but I'm not sure where to go. I've never gone before. Is there anywhere within an hour or maybe two of great falls where I might have some luck?
Thanks

check the regs for lakes but off the top of my head Frances and Tiber both allow spearing (not sure where to go on those lakes).

I know this sound preachy (it's not meant to be) but be sure to save your ice block you cut to fill in the hole or mark it with a branch so somebody doesn't end up through the ice.

Also, either slide the ice blocks under the ice before you start spearing, or stick them back in the hole when you're through spearing, so if they get covered by snow they won't create a hazard for snowmobiles.

Best thing to do with the ice block is to leave it alongside the hole it serves as a marker there is a hole there,  If it the ice is 12 inches or less leave the block on end so it will be visible to the snowmobilers

This is what we have always done as well as any branches we can find in addition.

Until it gets 14"of wet snow on it and you can no longer tell that it's an 80 pound ice block in the snowmobile headlights at 6 AM with a kid riding on the back. Put your blocks back in the hole! I almost died falling through an unmarked spear hole on thick ice covered with a big overnight dump of snow. If you spear, consider the safety of others. MARK YOUR HOLES!!! Please!  :)
