I know Dakotas are locked up.  They are already driving trucks on some lakes.

IFF, think you would like Keyhole Res. in WY.  Multi species including crappie, perch, pike and walleye.  Can take ATV if your not up for walking.  Lots of posts here in IS in WY fishing reports if you have access to that file.

Does  McConaughy freeze up?  Bet that would be a fun one to ice fish!

Not many of the really big lakes freeze safe in NE. Merrit, and Mac require brutal cold to get safe. Im sure you could get on some part of the inlet, like you can at jmart at times, but this winter doesnt seem to be "the one"

Plenty of good ice on Merrit.  I fished it last year in early December. You don't have to be out in the middle of the lake to catch good fish.

Yes,,, Merritt is iced up and a destination worth spending a day on, in my opinion.  Leaving Colorado it would be on your way to Devils Lake or Lake of the Woods.  We like to fish Merritt once or twice a year.  They do have big cats that some one mentioned on this thread.  Many of Nebraska lakes have cats and big ones too, if you know how to find them.

We try to travel several times every winter.  We make it winter vacations and pick an area or two to explore.  State Parks abound every where and many fish quite good in the winter, not always limits but pick up a few and enjoy the scenery.  You can visit other local interests along the way. Lots of history out there.
MN, ND, and SD are full of lakes...just so much water and so little time...just my 2 cents!
Tight lines everyone.
