A little help for my son and myself
« on: Dec 20, 2015, 01:39 PM »
Hey fishing gurus,

My son and I are thinking of heading out to Tarryall tomorrow am. I have never been there and I am looking for some help on what parts of the lake would fish well. My son is six and has a decent attention span, especially when snacks are involved, but I would love to hook him into some fish. Thanks

Nice to see you're taking your little maggot out to break him in early. Wish I could help on Tarryall but I don't know it at all. You might call Chris at Colorado Tackle Pro, 719-634-6939 who seems to be dialed in on all those Pikes Peak region lakes. Another option is Skaguay Reservoir, about six miles outside of Victor. It's pretty hard to miss catching trout out of there. If that's an option, PM me and I'll share some tips.
We're born, we live for a while, and then we die.  Sounds like a good reason to go ice fishing.

Or Evergreen lake, as long as you're careful to avoid unsafe ice by the inlet. Great action on stocker sized rainbows and some suckers too.
Flags up, gentlemen!!!

Dillon reservoir has kept me busy with stockers  up to 14 inches and it has a 100 yard walk or less
Pink plastic jig with shrimp or salmon powerbait!

Got told the ranger(s) were parked, watching with binoculars, LOL, even tried hiding their vehicle beside the building, with magnetic sign over its insignia  ::)

Are they looking for something in particular? We are set with a license and all legal gear so we should be good. Thanks for the heads up.

Terryall is a great place to take a young guy ice fishing. Just head out from the boar ramp area. Fish in 8-15 feet which obviously isn't out that far. That's a good spot to fish as it's easy to get on the ice and easy to get back to the car if your son gets too cold
The trout aren't too picky, they'll hit any number of jigs. Tip them with a wax worm or meal worm. If you're going up through Colorado Springs, stop in and see Chris or Travis at Colorado Tackle Pro. They tie some really nice little ice flys the will work great.
Good luck and enjoy the day with your son.

surprised you didn't get more answers on the other sight, Now days I just can not get excited about catching trout, especially stockers.  They will also hit 3" tube jigs tipped with sucker meat, especially the pike in there.

I agree with you on the stockers but when grooming a five year old to become your fishing buddy you have to put them in position for a little success. Terryall is hard to beat for that.

I agree with Bigassbassman. Plus, if you live in Denver Metro you can't beat a 40 minute drive to get on the ice.

I took my four kids on their first ice adventure and all of them got into some stockers. They had a blast and even though it was snowing the whole time there wasn't any wind. We didn't have a shelter and they lasted on the ice for about 4 hours before wet gloves and hands made us call it it a day.

And as he said, stay clear of the inlet as the ice is quite a bit thinner.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. We hit up Tarryall this morning and my son crushed it. 8 fish for the little man. No wind and a beautiful blue sky. We are going to try out evergreen this weekend and hopefully Dillon or elevenmile next week. He had a blast so thank you thank you thank you.

I started taking my son when he was three. First ice season he was four. He loves it  and I have a great fishing buddy.
