Start up list
« on: Dec 16, 2005, 09:48 PM »
If you had to make a list of things to get for a start-up ice fishing set what would it include.  I'm trying to get an idea of what most people consider to be essential gear, lures, and baits, so I can give a few buddies a list of sorts.  I already showed them my stuff, and told them I'd ask here to see what others had to offer.  So short or long, what would be on your list of musts for a new guy to the sport?

Fishin' Fool -

Crap, man...being a new guy to the sport myself - I can't really offer much.  I can say this, though....encourage your buddy(ies) to spend just a little bit....if they dig the heck outta the sport, they can go back and invest more money.  Here's a short list of what I consider are the essentials:

*  Bucket....gee, go figure, right?  Cost - Quite possibly, free!

*  Simplistic jig sticks....the ones with no reels.....two wooden knobs to wrap the line around.  Cost - $8.99 (Schooley's...package comes with pre-rigged line and a hole scoop)

*  One tip-up with quality line and set-up.  Cost - $19.99...that's for a decent wooden one

*  South-Bend Rod & Reel Combo....face it, it's for rookies like me....the package will have plastic wax worms and plastic grubs...pre-rigged line - some tear-drop jigs - depth finder - and some other small accessories.  It's perfect for pan fish.  Cost - $19.99

*  SPUD - Especially for this crappy ice were getting right now in SE Michigan....SPUD - SPUD - SPUD....safety first!  Cost - $?? - There maybe someone in the area who would be generous enough to let go of one that's sitting in their garage for the sake of helping out a newcomer!

*  If they can swing it, an auger.....seems there is always someone in the area with one for $10 - $20 used

*  High Quality Cold Weather Gear - nothing ruins a day on the ice more than getting cold within 20 minutes.  Cost - Crap...that could add up to $300 if the gear doesn't already exist!

*  Patience...Patience... Patience....Cost - Priceless!

I know I'm missing some items....thankfully, there are other members here who will be posting their thoughts very soon.....this would be a solid foundation, though....in my opinion!

Oh, yeah....remember this one too....Patience...Pati ence...Patience!

Tight Lines, Ya'll!

depends what you wantta fish for i see your form SE Penn so id say your fishing for bluegills crappie pike and walleye

Absolute bar min would be

-Warm cloths (may already own everything you need )

I recommend insulated rubber boats ( slushy ice, snow and drilling holes may give you wet feet) Got a pair last year at BPS for $35
Maybe they already own a carhart suit or a ski/snowmobile jacket
if not wool pants (army surplus store $20)work  optional- waterproof pants over them to keep you dry
a good hat and gloves $40
i bet they already own some type of winter jacket and at least 2 pairs of sweatshirts  I ussually wear a sweatshirt a down jacket and a waterproof shell over that
warm socks wool  poly propolene socks optional (shed moisture from your feet)

- A pair of picks incase something bad happens $5
- a section of rope  20ft long min (weight on end optional)I used a rubber truck bed  tie dow for a weight the weight is for throwing distance incase something bad happens
-an auger Mora's are now $35 i think  only need one auger per group
-A spud bar optinal for early ice (personally i dont own one yet)
-A jig rod HT has them for 7-8 bucks with a reel $15-20
-tipups (allowed 5 here in NY so price is a factor here) they make decent wooden ones for $6-7 each
-Some hooks and weights depending on species for tipups
-a small assortment of jigs $1 each  id' get 2 of each kind that works in the area Marmmoska's,  rat finki's, genz worm etc
- one plastic scooper $1.50
-a shelter optional ( a old camping tent can work as a wind break but doesnt heat well) or an old pair of ski's a little bit of lumber and you can makeyour self a box with a seat in it to drag your stuffon the ice then prop it up sit in it and youve got yourself a wind break :)
-a kids sled to haul some of you stuff on the ice (probably have one laying around) Jet sleds are nicer but cost 40-70 bucks

ID say this would get them going if they get hooked and wantta go all the time like most ivefisherman then theres always stuff too add to the list like another 5 grand worth of stuff :) everyyear the lsit jsut gets bigger and bigger

anyways I'd ask around for used stuff I use too have a15 extra tipups and an old mora and some old jig rods and w/e else that i had when i started that i gave away to beginners.

Thanks guys.  I guess I was pretty much right on with the list I gave them.  I did forget to mention the ice picks though.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
Thanks again.

From a newbie:
Helpful equipment for ice fishing:
large spoon with holes to take the ice and snow out of the hole

sled (a large rectangular wooden box with some old skis attached to the bottom, make for a perfect hauler. I've used a lawn cart with four wheels, but it's not as great in uneven snow and ice.)

sonar - attach transducer to a 2' of pvc pipe. This can be attached to an unused tip up or handheld. Leave in another hole and listen for beeps.

insulated boots,  ski suit

wrap around sun glasses or ski goggles (the glare is bad)

6lb-10lb test braid is good for tipups depending on species

ice cleats (Gander has some good ones made of rubber for $7, that you stretch from front to heel

medium action 2' rods with fast tips and spring bobber

step stool or large pail to sit on (& store your catch)

ruler to measure fish (9" min.)

fishing license!!

tackle:
florocarbon for spinning reels

small Swedish Pimple or Acme spoons (gold and silver)

1/32 or 1/64 oz unpainted jigheads (Dick's or Gander)

soft plastics: small 1"-1.5" tubes, grubs, finesse worms

split shot to get the light rigs down faster

tiny hair or flash jigs

bigger baits for bigger fish

mousie grubs or small active meal worms (juicier the better for scent cloud)
Berkley Power Grubs have also worked

Fishin Fool,
Welcome to our sport.  The difference between a diehard icefishing vet and a
rookie who gets cold and heads for shore after an hour is icefishing boots.  These
puppies have a ton of insulation worked into the boots themselves that keep your
feet up off the frozen water.  Felt pacs just don't cut it.  Warm toes are essential.
Pick up a schooley kit with everything you need and some bait.  Throw them into
a drywall pail and head out to where the other guys are fishin.  There is always an
open hole and a friendly iceangler to fill you in on bait, depth, presentation, etc.  Be
polite, explain your situation, and they will get you started icing fish.

case of adult beverage, is a real fine place to start ;D
The more fish we release, is more fish we all can catch.  b/c we all like to catch.   Catch, Photo, Release!!  Such an easy concept, but so hard for others to understand!!!!!
