  • Here fishy, fishy, fishy!!!
question if you don't mind.......

Which way do the jets turn? do they both close clockwise, open up counterclockwise?

also, if fine tuning while on the ice, do you adjust, just  the high volume jet?

Thank you, this was a great thread.....I experience some of the same problems listed.

just a footnote,  i believe strikemaster does not offer the 3 hp anymore.  coincidental  not.  that tecumseh 3hp engine is not a good engine.  i have had them in the shop quite often and it will take 3 days to try and dial in the carb.  you get it set , wait an hour and lite it up again and have to dial the carb all over again.  strikemaster did the right thing by not carrying that engine anymore.  everyone in here talks about drilling hole faster????  calculate once how much time you saved, 3 minutes in the day.   strikemaster's  2 hp engine..... runs at 6000 rpm with there 24:1 gearbox ratio the auger is spinning at 250 rpm's.  with jiffy's 3 hp  engine runs at 4500  with a 12:1 gearbox ratio  375 rpm's. someone here can do the math, i just fix them  L.O.L  anyway  is it worth the headache of what everybody in here seems to be complaining about.   while you can't start or have troubles running your jiffy 3hp stealth,  the guy next to you with his strikemaster 2 hp lazer just cut 10 holes. ???????????????

ok this could lead to many factors..but you main thing could be carb,or plug..depends if the idle screw is high enought???...right there is your problem.or it could be a float adjustment????..you could have dirt in the bottom of the float bowl??you could be mixin too lean on gas and oil??makin your plug grey..check em and let me know??

prepration  h     NONE of these carbs have a float/float bowl     they are all 2 cycle diaphragm style carbs.  on the 2 hp models on the inside there is a small screen that acts as a fuel filter.  on the 3 hp  there is none inside the carb....

This has been quite an informative discussion.  I was having a hard time deciding between the Jiffy or a Strike Master 2hp lazer mag.  With so many fisherman having the same problem I think I've  decided which.

I would like to add that I own both the 3hp and 2hp Jiffy.  Two different engines.  Two different drills.
I never have issues with starting the 3hp, just keeping it running between holes (if I don't want to shut it off).
Like I wrote earlier, I can lay the 2hp on the ice and it runs.  I do the same with the 3hp, and it dies.
BUT it starts right up when I am ready to drill the next hole, after lugging it 10-20yards away.

I would suggest you borrow a buddies auger (if you can), Oldbear.  Try out the various brands, models, sizes, and
then decide.

I really like the White Lightning, 2hp.  It's light, fast, runs and starts easy.  I wish I would have bought it first.
8" is plenty big hole in the ice.

Like Mainedog said : "I would suggest you borrow a buddies auger (if you can), Oldbear.  Try out the various brands, models, sizes, and then decide."

I have 20 years of fishing experience with a Jiffy model 30.  I have had friends bring their augers. The two Jiffy's I have been running (both model 30 10". One is 22 years old and the other is 4 years old) Both augers are nothing but dependable. The Jiffy's have outcut, and outlasted any other auger I have had personal experience with. My buddy had an Eskimo. He bought the Eskimo after I bought my Jiffy. He has bought two augers in the 4 years. The second is now a Jiffy model 30!

The model 30 Jiffy is by far, the most dependable auger out there!  If you want to buy one auger that will last a lifetime..........Go Jiffy!

  • 10" Hole = Less tales of the big one that got away
Yes, Jiffys are great augers. Been using the same model 30 10" for 10 or 12 years and 1000s of holes with no major problems just regular maintenance, been through 2 diaphragm kits which are easy to install, and a new plug every year.

I would like to add a follow up to this thread....after much fussing around with the carb adjustments on the 3hp, and a spring replacement, I have finally gotten my 3hp to run while on its side laying on the ground.  I had it doing this before the start of last year's season, but didn't use the drill much.  I replaced a spring last weekend (which helped); replaced the pull cord several weeks ago (this one seems to chew them up); sharpened the blades.  I should repaint the flutes where the paint came off several years ago, but she's ready for this season.  Kind of sad to leave this workhorse in the shed all season because I'm taking the smaller, White Lightning instead.

I have the Jiffy 3hp Legend XT.  I have it somewhat tuned, following the instructions provided.  I've heard that the carb can be swapped out for an older carb.
With the Older carb(which are getting harder to find) the newer 3hp Techumseh engines run fine.  The auger is still under warranty, but I was planning on swapping the carb after warranty to try to get this thing to run better.  Has anyone done this?(replace the carb).  If so, what model number carb would I get?

I've used the search and cannot find anything on adjusting a jiffy 30 carb... I just rebuilt the carb with a kit, after it sat for 8 years. Got tips on adjustment from other sites and got it back up and running. New gas, seafoam, proper oil mix, new plug... Ive got the idle (low/left needle) good but cannot get it to transfer over to high speed with out bogging at first...or can get it to switch over but bogs after about 5 seconds and with load? any other ideas
