I gotta agree with you my friend, I had the worst day out all year on a great lake that never let me down. Until today. Maybe the snow rolling in slowed the action down, had a few flags early and some minimal jigging action but as soon as the snow started, not 1 flag and couldn't get a bite on the jig.

I was jumping hole to hole yesterday at misery bay and had tons of lookers  on the flasher that just wouldn't hit. Frustrated I went back to the shanty to check on my girlfriend dropped my jig down a hole and saw on the camera that my tiny jigs were just spinning around & around. Didn't have any new line or swivels with me so i Switched to a Swedish pimple which is heavier and a more verticle lure and what do u no? When the lure isn't spinning in circles the fish are hungry! I've had this happen allot late in the season after catching hundreds of fish on the same line with tiny jigs. I personally don't use swivels on my ice fishing gear. Instead I prefer to change the line more often.  With these long seasons we've been having I would check to make sure u or anyone else isn't having the same problem. Anyone want to comment on what they do to stop jigs from spinning? I use a camera allot and i can tell u that allot of fish won't hit a spinning jig so I'd look into it if your having allot of lookers and only a few hitters.

thats odd, honestly i have been doing better with just line spin not actually jigging. I was up to Long pond a few weeks back and 2 fella's came and spoke to us on the lake that were fishing. wish i got their names. Anyway i showed him on my rod the line twisting thing and withing a minute he says man you got a bite..... Biggest brook trout i have ever caught, and the largest perch i have ever was at long pond tourney doing line twist.

this year I placed a size 12 hook (gate up) then I tied a small barrel swivel below the hook.  this allowed the hook to slide freely on my line.  I then tied about a 16" leader to the swivel and then my jig.  This stopped the line from twisting.  I caught more fish this year on that the free sliding hook tipped with either waxies or maggots than on my jig , to include a couple slab crappie and perch.

I agree! Just pull on the line! When I tie on a new jig I always stretch my line out! I think it really does help line spin!
That's your tip for the day!

Another thing I don't see a lot of guys doing is pretty basic. If you're not fishing extreme depths you might want to pull line off a spinning reel against the drag instead of popping the bail. It takes longer but greatly reduces line twist. Also greatly decreases your chances of having your drag set to tight or loose.

I fish a lot like Van, I always pull my line from the reel. I set up two jigging rods different this year and had great results, one was a wippy 24 noodle and one was a 20 light rod, spooled with 4 lb solar Sufix, then the smallest swivel they make, with 2 or 3 lb clear leader Suffix, no line twist at all. I fish shallow and stretch my line, but like to leave a slight coil in the hole,I really got into line watching this year more than ever and got away from springs this winter, that had something to due with the (cold springs icing and the windy days)

I have to admit I pop the bail all of the time and use tungsten to get the bait down quick. Using the camera allot I have learned that In certain spots when the fish seem to be on the move feeding heavy, if me and my fishing partner can't keep bait in front of a school of pannies they seem to move on rather quickly. keep bait in front of em and they'll stick around for a good while. Other spots like when the fish are holding tight to cover and not moving much at all, I could see taking a lil more time and using this line pulling technique. I will definitely give pulling the line a try next year but if it does take allot longer to get the bait down, I'm probably still gonna pop the bail and experiment with swivels, an inline reel, and continue to change the line twice a season. For whatever reason it seems like i can get atleast 20-25 trips out before it starts to happen. Just thought I would bring the line twist issue up to maybe help a newbie or someone who doesn't realize they may be having these issues. Thanks for all of the tips and posts this year guys.  Bob.
