some guys were going with the tanaka I think is the spelling of the power head and a nils auger and blade set up... and they liked it I think they save a buck or tow on it to...

if you do go with the nils power head I don't see how you could go wrong...

Love mine and have no regrets at spending the money.  So much easier to drill holes all day with this setup.  If you fish ice that has a lot of wind blown dirt or sediment the Nils will dull out faster but you can get them sharpened.  Tanaka is a remarkable power head.  Enjoy

Just  a bit of advice I can give from experience. Hands down the nils 8in auger is the smoothest fastest auger I have seen or ran. It just plan ass cuts smooth. Now reopening holes....not so smooth. Now if your running a gas power head does it really matter what auger your running? IMO where an 8in nils absolutely shines is when you pair it with a Milwaukee drill, clam plate, and 4amp+ battery. It's fast, super light, and no noise opening holes on areas where fish get hammered on. I had cut 30 or so holes in two feet of ice on one battery. If your going to run a gas powered auger, I feel you might has well get a chipper blade to reopen holes.
Hope this helps your quest.

I can't speak specially for the nills but most that have the nills swear by it. What i can speak of is the tanaka powerhead which if you buy the power nills through cabelas and most other sites is what comes with it. You cannot go wrong. Very nice powerhead. I use the mora with mine and it rips ice like crazy. Personally I'd save the $120 from mora to nills and buy an extra auger that has chipper blades to swap out on the tanka if need be. Tanaka will mora 8in weighs about 23lbs or so. Super light. You may save like 5-7lbs is all with a drill setup by the time you add the plate, etc. Then you worry about batteries. Each setup has its pros and cons so whatever you do most, buy accordingly.

I don't know about the Nils power augers, but the 8" Nils hand crank I bought last year cuts through 2 feet of ice in about minute.

Try Red Rock Wilderness Store I preordered mine before the season a few years ago and it was discounted. I am not sure when the deadline was for ordering was.

I have run that set up for the past 3 seasons and it can't be beat. I have zero complaints. It has taken a serious beating on Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay the past couple of years. Super light, fast and sips gas.
