Airplanes and Ice Fishing!
« on: Jan 08, 2006, 07:20 AM »
I was fishing a local lake in Madison County yesterday and was surprisingly startled by an airplane landing on the ice. Then 2 guys got out with buckets and an auger, then proceded to fish.
How cool would that be :woot: :woot: :woot:

AW, was that on Eaton Brook?  I was fishing the Northern Challenge in Tupper Lake last year and a couple planes were flying around and landed on the ice. Pretty spooky watching them flying 50 feet above 1500 ice fihermen!  I'd like to get a SuperCub and put floats on it and fish all those remote lakes in the Adirondacks.

Someday....

It is kind of cool. We saw a small helicoptor land on the S end of Silver two weeks ago.
I think they were looking for someone.  ???

I've seen it on Onieda lake before....planes fly about 50 feet overhead and then touch down on the ice.  Pretty neat sight to say the least

Quite a few years ago on Sodus Bay a plane with skis landed near me. The pilot got out and  asked how thick the ice was :o. Now that is huge ones :cookoo:    Actually the ice was about 8".  Any ways he asked if I wanted to go up with him..... I couldn't pass up the opportunity.   We made a trip around the bay, in small older, noisey 2-seater.  Even though I thought the pilot may not have been all there, I look at it as being pretty cool 8)

Saw land on Sodus a few years back, the guy got out and came over to shoot the shhht with me for a while.  Pretty neat.  Oh by the way, killed the perch that day while he was in the air, while he was talking to me and after he left.  Go figure.

FingerLakes Fisher, What do you think....same guy?.... I've seen what I think to be the same plane over the bay more than a couple of times over the years. The Williamson airport is not far from the bay and I know there are a couple of private airfields in the area.  This plane is white, quite noisy, has skis on the landing gear. The 2 seats are in a line in the fuselage.

We had a yellow plane fly real low (about 10' ) over the ice saturday on lake Pleasant. They were so low you could feel the wash from the propeller as they went over us.

I fish on the Sacandaga near Northville and have seen several planes land on the lake and go to the Pub. One day last year while out there, six of them landed one after the other to go to Sport Island Pub.

There used to be a guy years ago that would fish Oneida with a plane. He flew out of the airport by Beck's Grove just north of the lake. He was a Korean war vet and the plane was a surpluse spotter plane. He would fly around the local lakes, Delta, Caz, ect then set down where he saw the most action. Pretty cool.

I've been fishing both hard and soft water and had planes fly low overhead and land.
On the ice, the pilot was just checking to see how the fishing was on various lakes; on the
water, the pilot was dropping off a pair of new eye glasses to my neighbor (the pilot was the
optometrist who just happened to make "house" (lake) calls).  I don't think flying low, landing on water/ice
is unique to NYer's.  Seems to happen with all too much frequency up here in Maine too.
Too bad you NYer's are wanting for ice, perhaps you'll get some soon.  Then you can catch all your
big fish and enter them in the tourney.  ;)

Apparently, If I was fishing and saw a plane land next to me, we are in no need of ice. Go back to the Maine thread before a plane swoops down and drops Cat Sh()t ion your Shanty :P
