custom 6in. hand auger conversion to power head
« on: Feb 20, 2015, 02:27 PM »
I had to drop my niece and dad off at the bus stop this am they are off to florida. I brought my Eskimo Z71 power head and old mora 6in. hand auger. I went over to dads work and the machine shop. Same guys from 20 years ago when i worked there, anyway They built me a custom coupler and welded it on to the mora handle so I now have a 6in. auger for my powerhead. the 10in has been a lot of work in this 2ft rock hard ice, the six inch has a 1/3 the surface area so it should cut a lot better

Come on get on the ice fish!!

For panfish I  use a Dewalt 20 volt drill to drive my 41/2 inch Nils.   Boy does it go through ice fast and only weighs 8 lbs.

Are you just using a simple drill connector or did you buy the drill plate set up?

Nicely done. Reading this thread I think I am going to combine a few ideas. I am going to have a shop make a coupler that is able to be bolted on both ends. One for the power auger shaft and the other end sized to fit inside the auger shaft (just like a normal handle) with bolt connection. I will then be able to use a variety of my auger sizes. Thanks guys.

Why can't someone just make an adapter and sell it? we have them for electric drills.. make it the same concept but with a coupler on the end for strikemaster and eskimo (sorry jiffy guys, you are backwards). I'd buy one for sure. Love to have the option for a 6" bit for my eskimo without having to buy a strikemaster power bit.

My 6 inch Nills came with the drill bit and plate.   My 41/2" Nills was just a hand auger but I found a simple stainless steel drill bit attachment (on Ebay) for $19.  I use the smaller blade to search with the fish finder and swap to the 6 inch when I find bigger fish.   The 20 volt Dewalts drill and two batteries only cost me $98!

did the same thing with my 6 inch nils (finally) just so happened my old jiffy 50 lite has clockwise rotation so a matter of a coupler and 2 bolts done deal. thing is sick. I can more or less cut with one hand. nice work, didn't think I was the only one to do this.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there would be a shortage of fishing poles.

Sure would like to see the one you are making. No need for me to try an invent something you already have. Send me a PM and will make arrangements to meet. I also live in Barre.
Thanks.

Saw that custom in action today and it cut thru about 18-20" of ice like butter!
Wes, was great fishing with you & John this afternoon, too bad the bite was as hot as we'd like it have been but was great day none the less.
