Awesome fish!

Having never caught a laker, is it a challenge to release them knowing that they come from such deep water?  I know from having caught perch and bass from really deep water that they often bloat up and can be tough to release.

Usually isn't a problem as lakers have the ability to burp out air on the way up, and once they're topside. Just want to make sure they're revived before you let go of the tail.

Great catch Fishkateer, how about some details.  What state was it caught in and live bait or jigging.

Before we let this guy go we burp him and keep him out of the water for the least amount of time possible. Just enough to burp him take a photo or two and say goodbye. Caught in New York-on a tip up!

Burping them means to get all of the air out them. You sorta just slid your hand up the belly to its mouth squeezing and essentially they burp. It helps them to be able to swim back down to the bottom.
