Laker tackle question
« on: Jan 29, 2015, 09:55 PM »
I got a buddy coming up from fla. to visit he wants to get into some Lakers I don't ever get to fish for them .  My go to place has rainbows, browns, perch, pickerel and bass. So I'm pretty set up for those targets.
We are going to hit winni up should I up my line on one of my jig  rods or add a heavier leader  I have 6lb trilene  micro ice on and same for my leaders on my traps.  Leave as is or change it up?
Any info is much appreciated! Thanks

You'll be just fine for 80 or 90% of the Lakers you may hook up with. We all want the 8, 10, 12 or 15lber. And they are in there to-be-sure. But most likely the fish you hook into will be between 18 and 24 inches; 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 lbs. 6" leader should serve you well.

You'll be fine.  I run 6 or 8 lbs. for lakers. Never had a problem around here.  Just have to be aware of what you're using and take it slow if you do actually hook into something big.  So,  for one trip,  I wouldn't rush to make any changes.

However,  depending on how long your leader is,  you may want to lengthen it.  Winni is very clear,  and trout can be line shy.  I usually run between 6 and 10 feet of leader.

You should be fine with that! If jigging use a stiffer rod, easier hook set!

If your going to fish the big lake, I suggest you go straight over to AJ's bait and tackle in Meredith and talk to Alan. He'd get you set up with the right stuff, jigs, line, bait, accessories...for lake trout fishing. He knows best.

Good luck and post up!

I pick him up in Manchester and plan on stopping in to AJ's on our way back.
