(WKOW) – A southeast Wisconsin man and his son have died after they were pulled out of Lake Winnebago early Sunday morning.
Detectives say 40-year-old Andrew Doro and his eight-year-old son, Derek, were going ice fishing. They fell into the lake when their Jeep hit a crack in the ice. Rescue crews pulled them out just after 7 a.m., but both died from their injuries.
“It's happened a few times, and it's just unfortunate that someone (died), we had a fatality,” said Don Herman, an ice fisherman.
“You don't want to see anybody get hurt out there,” said Gary Buskirk, an ice fisherman. “Everyone comes out here with their kids and stuff. They go out and do some fishing, you know, and enjoy themselves. Just got to be careful out there, that's all there is to it.”
The Doros were from Sussex, near Milwaukee. Officials say it's important to check ice conditions before going onto lakes after our recent warmer temperatures and strong winds.
