What To Do In Case You Fall In - Safety Vids
« on: Jan 20, 2015, 09:38 AM »
In light of the fatal tragedy at Keystone Power Dam this past weekend, I wanted review what to do in case I fell through the ice.  I know veteran ice fisherman/fisherwomen are familiar with these safety procedures, but it never hurts to do a refresher.  Good luck and always keep safety in mind when out fishing on the ice

It also helps to keep yourself in EXCELLENT PHYSICAL CONDITION. Benefits you off the ice too (in many ways).

Good point Subtle - staying in shape, having and using the right safety gear, knowing what to do in case of an emergency, etc. all helps safety-wise.

If I have to be in excellent physical condition,id never be on the ice.I have ra in 95% 0f my joints and have both manicases torn in my right knee, and Im about 40lb over weight do to my RA MEDS.i still get out and give her h**l.
I think the biggest mistake you can make is to go out by yourself on the ice.
if someone else is on the lake but not with you ,I would got talk to them and let them know im there before I start fishin.
some ice safety is common sence but, sometimes accidents happen.
being in good shape can help im sure, but im not gunna stay home because I have RA and am a bit over weight.just my opinion.

I couldn't agree more chez, you should never let physical limitations dictate what you choose to do in life. That's like giving up!!!!!!

Mental preparation and safety equipment is all you really can do.  I am 33 and in fairly good shape.  I will not go onto the ice with out my picks and a throw rope.   I know that it is over kill but I wear a life jacket with a whistle out side on my Parka as well.  The videos that are linked in this post are great to help prepare yourself mentally.  All that being said I still break one of the cardinal rules and fish by myself on occasion.  Thanks for the post..... Stay safe.

These videos are great and certainly worth the time to watch them. I do want to share another link. Go to http://www.idigear.com/arcticarmor.php. Click in the video drop down and you can watch documentation from independent news sources demonstrating Artic Armor flotation suits. Ice fishermen spend big bucks for their suits. They are warm and great looking...but they do not float. Me and my buddies have owned Arctic Armor suits for 4 years and I have personally watched how they float the body when someone falls through. I hope I'm not violating an Ice Shanty rule buy mentioning this product...if I am I hope the administrators let it stand for the sake of every ones safety. The only affiliation I have with this product is that "I'M A BELIEVER".

Good deal, thanks for sharing the link Irish! I wear a PFD, but have considered getting the Artic Armor suit.  I will likely get one at the end of the season (hopefully, they will be on sale).  When/if I get one, I'll probably field test it when it gets warm and have confidence in it for next season.   @)
