as i get older/feet colder
« on: Jan 13, 2015, 10:29 PM »
Hello shantiers (new word?)

So as I'm getting older I have noticed my feet are getting cool when I sit and fish for some time.  If I get up and walk around they warm up fairly quick.

My current footwear is smartwool liners, heavy smartwool socks, then a pair of muck boots.  I like the boots so I'm looking for better/warmer socks without moving too thick or my feet will be too tight in the boots.

Has anyone tried alpaca socks?  Any other suggestions?

You sound like you are well onto the right track.

You like your boots so that's good.

Are they a size bigger than needed to allow for extra socks without being tight?
A guide I know in Northern MN. buys his boots 2 sizes bigger than needed allowing plenty of room for several pairs of socks.

I know some smart socks use different components.
Have you tried Merino wool socks? http://us.icebreaker.com/en/why-icebreaker-merino/what-is-icebreaker-merino.html

You can usually find some place running a sale on them. The site posted was just because of their explanation.

http://gerbing.com/ would be another choice if you wanted to try a heated sock. I have no personal experience with them just a few positive reviews. I do know their motorcycle vests work as advertised.

I have also heard that rubbing cayenne pepper onto the soles of your feet is supposed to get blood flowing. You are on your own there.

Food in the belly and hot liquid goes long ways! I guess so does seeing the bobber go down!

Good luck!

Cold feet suck! Period!

Alpaca wool socks rock.  I have a couple from these guys http://www.mistyacresalpaca.com/mens

The classic crew are great for every day, I have 2 pair of the blizzard Noreaster socks (page 2) - these are my hunting/fishing socks.  They take up the extra room in the muck boots and are super comfy - They are thicker than regular socks but are not binding.

These socks are very durable, I had a set from another place they only lasted a year but these still look like new and are 2 years old.

Feet and hands are the hardest thing to get good gear for - hands more than feet

Thanks all, the boots are the right size for the sock setup I'm using.....when I throw the boots on for a quick trip to the mailbox with just regular socks on they are too big...I'll probably bite the bullet on alpaca socks....around here they are $37 or so a pair :(

As an alternative I have a pair of socks from Carhartt - they are made from worsted wool and are about 15-20 each - thick feet and the usual uppers but they will last, use a liner and you will be good to go.

I'll buy those $20 jobs from my link but I think I have a lifetime supply with those Nor'easters

Fancy socks won't cut it.  I just posted a long response in another thread regarding Mukluks.

You might also try spraying your feet with antiperspirant.  It slows down the clamminess that occurs as the day drags on.  Also, carry a light weight piece of closed cell foam, just big enough to place your feet on, to insulate from the ice.
