Halleck Pond
« on: Jan 12, 2015, 02:58 PM »
Anyone fished Halleck Park pond yet this winter in Papillion? I know they stocked a bunch of trout prior to ice up, and there are panfish and supposedly some decent catfish in there. Thinking about checking it out this weekend.

I haven't fished it myself, but I drive by often enough and there are people who do ice fish it.  I think it would be a good body of water to take some kids to, wouldn't take too much searching to find the fish, and if they lose interest after a bit there's a nice big playground close by.

I live about 6 blocks from Halleck park. I fish it about 3 times a week on my way home from work from about 5 to 5:30. I average about 10 fish in that span. Most of them are trout very small bluegills,an occasional catfish and largemouth bass. I fish the east end as the west end has a lot more traffic. I release everything as I think this is a very good pond for youth and novice fishermen to get to learn and enjoy the sport of ice fishing.

Good to know about the east end. Have they been suspended or close to the bottom, and what have they been biting on? I've got a handful of spikes left that I'd like to use up this weekend, but would buy a few minnows too if those work better. I like to catch and release too, so would appreciate any advice you can offer.

I have used wax worms, minnows  and red worms on the same trip and I can honestly say, they all work well So now I just use wax worms for convenience. I use a vexilar but sonar is not needed, just find the bottom, about 7 feet deep, and bounce it up about a foot. You will catch a good number of fish.
