« on: Oct 06, 2014, 07:10 AM »

There are many posts on this but I thought this would give me an oppotunity to also post my review on the new Dave Gentz Elite Spooler that came out since I had a chance to use it over the weekend.

To me a big component of what straight line reel you should get will be based on how you hold the reel.  Honestly if you pencil grip/pistol grip (whatever you want to call it) there is no way most of last years models will make a person happy.  So many times my hand would be resting on the spool and stop the spool while I was cranking in.  Any straight line model I bought last year sat in my rod locker and rarely got used.  If you hold it a different way, then any of the straight line models i.e. Eagle Claw, Gentz Spooler, Frabill 261, 6061, would be fine just some components will higher quality/lighter weight than others.  The only straight line reel I liked was from two years ago called the Frabill 261 and only because the spool was completely housed with a spool guard but it was a heavy reel to boot.

Now, I think a lot of the companies have re-made these reels to accommodate a lot of these complaints this year.  As you can see the 13 fishing 6061 now has a semi spool guard on the open spool side which will protect your hand from stopping the spool.  I have been told these are nice reels although I haven't used one and am hoping to buy one this year since they made the improvement and see how it goes.  Frabill has the 371 coming out which is like last years 261 (which I didn't like) but now has the spool guard so I might give that a second chance.  Eagle Claw doesn't look like they changed theirs but maybe I'm looking at last years model still.

I had a chance to use the Dave Gentz Spooler Elite this weekend on open water and really liked it.  What they did to counter your hand getting in the way of the spool is that they put the open side of the spool on the opposite side so that it's on the crank side.  It also has a nice drag on it.

One other thing is that if you go with the Frabill, eagle claw, or 6061 (13 fishing).  Essentially that is going to feel more like a bait caster in your hands in regards to how the drag works and the bait clicker and all the features that they have.

If you are going for a true straight line experience and want something middle priced that is new to the market this year AND also want a middle of the line priced reel I would at this point in the year recommend that Dave Gentz Spooler Elite.

If you prefer a bait caster style straight line, it will be hard to find a fair price one so I would probably either go with the Eagle Claw or experiment with the new Frabill 371 since it will be very light but it looks to be a little pricier.

Thanks for that!!! I have the original Black Betty and tossed it in a drawer because of the problems you stated, plus it is only 1:1 and has no free spool, plus the drag tightens the spool up so you need to loosen it up to drop your jig/lure/bait!! Or just leave it loose and use your hand on the spool as the drag!! You have given me some ideas on straight line reels that I can pursue this winter!!! Thanks a bunch!!! Tight lines!!!  :icefish:
By the way, the Frabill 371 looks to be the cat's meow for me!! But at $69.99, I'm going to have to be a VERY good boy for Christmas!!!!  ;)2

take a look at the new no. 8 tackle cgi  inline. http://no8tackle.com/. this company is a sister company of 13 fishing which they told me that this composite reel is the same as the 6061 13 fishing reel just made from composite material

the no 8  cgi tackle does have a free spool it is the gold knurled nut in the center of the handle just push it in. the tension adjustment for the free spool, is the little knob on the side adjacent to the clicker button. this is what no 8 tackle told me and it weghts 6.0 oz.

I have 4 Black Betty 6061's. I really like them alot. That being said I always fish in a portable,  the couple times I have fished outside they get very cold on the hand. I also have had 4 Eagle Claw's and they seemed to work fine although my buddy ordered 4 and one was junk right from the factory.

I have two eagle claw inlines and I like them although there is a bit to be desired as far as the drag. I run 4lb p-line fluorocarbon
