Smelt in champlain
« on: Jan 14, 2015, 09:53 PM »
I caught my first smelt today while perch fishing. Saw them swimming a few inches under the ice past my hole and managed to catch three of them! Never eaten one, but from what I hear I'm in for a treat!

I rank them right up there with yellow perch and walleye.  If they're small you an eat them bones and all.  Since the Alewifes moved in I hadn't heard of many being caught.  Enjoy.

That's great to hear. I thought the smelt were completely eradicated out of Champlain.

Nope! I had a small school of them swim by right under the ice. It was pretty neat to see! Thanks guys, I'll eat them as a snack tonight!

We picked up a few just south of the Champlain Bridge last weekend. Saw a few different schools suspended on the flasher. The ones we caught were all in the 3 1/2" to 4" range. Tough to pick them off when they're that size! Good to see them though. Hopefully its a sign of things to come.
Ice fishing is a social activity that may occasionally be interrupted by the catching of fish.
