I usually spear early season out of a Clam Nanook.  My hole is about 2 feet wide by 2-2.5 feet deep.  It helps to take a small piece of plywood to rest your spear tines on, otherwise they usually stick or start melting into the ice.

Set up my Clam flip over for spearing last year with great success.  I make the hole as big as I can and still have room to stand, and put out my heater and other small items.  Used parts from old tip-ups and zip tied them the support bars to run line straight down the hole.  This year I added black plastic to the top and sides to help block out the sun.  It can be hard to see on sunny days.
