Floodway at Lockport?
« on: Jan 02, 2006, 07:47 PM »
Hey everybody, has anyone tried fishing a bit farther north from the Locks yet? I'm curious to wonder if anyone had ever fished Lockport where the floodway spills into the Red. I'd like to fish Lockport soon, as that is where all the action is right now, but I would also like to stay away from the large crowd that gathers at the west wall.

littlebigman...I'm not a fan of crowds as well. Sadly the only place on the Red that produces on a regular basis is the spot right in front of the lock... that is the place boats come through during the summer. As we all know mother nature has been kind to us Manitobans in the weather end of it and ice conditions down there are poor. In my experience several feet of ice can be expected here by winters end but that may not happen if it stays mild. So EXTREME caution should be taken near the dam structure.

I have caught walleye and sauger at the floodway exit during open water but on the west side of the river where the channel is deep. Can't see why one could not catch a few right now if an effort was put in. Good luck and keep posting your findings.

Be careful if you do try.  A couple winters ago when the shack village was still up at lockport driving onto the ice by the floodway there was open water spots in the outlet.
