Hard Luck at 70 Feet - 6 Dec 2014
« on: Dec 08, 2014, 12:32 PM »
The ice is about 12-13 inches thick, fishing over 115 feet of water. AKnook came up from Anchorage and put on a clinic doubling up in no time - off the lake early we were. I was a zero and he was a hero - good times

Fish were caught at about 70 feet and released.

largest fish went about 32 inches in length

Great pic. Nice fish
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

Very cool!  Wish we had that kind of ice around here now.  What do you have 4' of it by the end of the season?

JMSS - thank you for consistently posting fish porn and useful pointers here and another forum I frequent... You continue to give us average Joe's something to strive for... Helps me, at least, to believe "there in there"... Not trying to get weird or sentimental but I appreciate your posts. Keep the pictures comin! Good luck out there.

Hello I live in Michigans Upper Peninsula and fish lake trout threw the ice on Lake Superior. My question is what do you use to catch your lakers? we use lead jig with cut bait on them, bouncing them right on bottom. Just wondering how everyone else does it. Thanks Rob

Check out this video from the guys at InDepthOutdoors:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGbCRXPZun0

These guys are from Minnesota and produce some nice outdoor fishing videos.  The one above has them ice fishing on Lake Superior just outside Duluth, Minnesota.  They talk about their tactics and the exact lures they use.  I think you will find it very helpful.

1/2 or 1/4 lead jig, single hook with 3 or 4 inches plastic tube  (I believe it imitates the bait fish, least cisco, they feeb on) we use electronics to watch the water column under us, and raise and lower our offering to entice a strike. Some fish are caught on the bottom, some come in from the side at various depths and some appear to rise agressivly from under you.

There are hundreds of video on youtube... This one is actually of us (taken a couple years ago) , and hopefully gives you a visual to answer your specific question - Video is catch a lake trout and an artic char 135 feet deep in about 145 feet of water. Bait fish were very active about 10-20 feet off the bottom and we tried jigging right in the middle of the bait ball. You can see the results here

Thanks for the note -

I have strung my reels with P-Line TCBX-braid 20lb test this year. Its a teflon coated braided line. I run a 2 foot leader of P-Line fluorocarbon 15 or 20 lb test at the end , connected by a barrel swivel.

since its teflon coated how does it do with outside temps.  does it soak up much water?

I have had no noted issues in three outings with the new TCB - I used P-LIne Spectrex braid on tip-ups and reels prior to the new TCB coming out recently. Typically these lines are designed with traditional casting in mind. The teflon allows for smoother - longer casting and better abrasion resistance.

I was thinking that it might work well with iced up line guides and sharp edges present on the underside of an ice hole.

I just spooled it on in December. The line has a small diameter thanI amnormally using and flows between the line guides well (even when iced up) coldest I have been out with it is about -10. I have not seen any noticable difference with water saturation in either direction. I had good confidence and landed a nice laker using it on New Year's day. Liking the line and will know more how I feel about it, the more I use it. One thing  is I hope they offer more colors later on.

I have used several other brands of braided lines for deep water ice fishing, the line in the video from 2012 is a Trilene product called fireline crystal. I have also used straight mono lines.

water absorbtion extremely minimal - line stayed pliable and did not freeze in temp as low as -10 - after being submerged and surfaced continously for several hours. I am very pleased with the line.
