What do you prefer for leaders on your tip ups? fluorocarbon or monofilament? and why.

Use the fluoro leader material instead of the regular fluoro line

fluoro.... invisible underwater and absolutely zero stretch for better hook sets and very abrasion resistant! Make sure you get the fluoro leader material tho or you experience what jopes is experiencing....

I agree with loudmouth definitely get the leader material with floro it's coated and significantly more abrasion resistant I really like the seguar blue label. Make sure to get a bit of lube or spit on the knot before cinching it down the higher density of the floro will heat up the knot if not lubricated causing it to severely weaken.

I have tried flouro on open water as well.  To me it is all junk.

Not many lakes out here where the walleye will consistently hit tipups.  Most are hitting spoons while jigging.  But the few lakes they do hit, I just tie on a 10# mono and they hit that.

Ive got plenty of lakes i can go out and catch them on tip ups. was just curious what people used. I usually use mono but i think i might try the leader fluoro out

It's all about the knot with flouro and braids.  Only use a polomar knot off of a swivel and you shouldn't have any more line breakage than you would with mono.  I've tested multiple knots with different lines and this is it and swear by it. I use 8 lb flouro leaders for 25 lb salmon if that says anything about my confidence in the knot.
I prefer a 2oz sinker for perch...when it hits 'em they won't feel a thing

Here's the deal the way I see it. When live bait like shiners, suckers and chubs slow down after being on the line of a tip-up a while, fish like walleyes and northerns have an opportunity to actually see and watch the bait. Fluro offers you the best shot at the most life-like presentation. If you had a choice to either use a line that practically disappears or one that doesn't, which one would you pick?

I guess I don't understand why you wouldn't use Fluoro? I have absolutely no problem with it on my charter boat Spring-Fall, Steelhead fishing in the Fall, and on the ice all Winter. I'm a huge McCoy Fishing Line fan, but there are a lot of other good companies out there. For Walleye if I'm chasing Lake Ontario/Erie where there is potential for fish 12+lbs I'm running 10lb. On Lakes with smaller Walleye I'm running 6lb. I use a small micro swivel to join the braid backing and fluoro leader.
