Jiffy Model 30 Help
« on: Nov 21, 2014, 09:29 PM »
Have a Model 30 thats about 25 years old last year took it out and just as it would start to break through the hole at the very end it would catch very hard and the auger bit would completely stop and the motor would jerk me around about 1/4 of a turn without breaking through. Replaced the blades figuring it was dull blades and still have the same issue. Any one have an idea of what the issue is?

My guess is the cutting blade is mounted 'up' to the bottom (point) face of the flat plate instead of properly 'down' to the top face (flighting side) of the bottom plate. That would cause the blade to grab too great a thickness of ice as it breaks through the bottom of the ice. Hope I've explained that well enough.

Is the auger plate bent? in the pic it almost looks bent up vs a flat/level plate on the bottom.

I think it's just the angle of the picture but the blade is parallel to the ground when it is upright

The blades are sharpened at the correct angle? I once had a guy sharpen a set that he did get sharp, but the angle was wrong and cut like crap. I sent it in to have the right angle done, and it cuts great now.

So does everything run/cut great besides when you break through the bottom of the hole and it catches? I had it where the drill would run great then about 1/2 to 3/4 the way down the hole it would stop turning.......adjustme nt of the idle screws fixed it.

They are factory blades so they should be cut correctly and yea it runs great until just before it breaks through the ice..... I'll have to check out the idle screws though (i read something on here about how to adjust them) and see how it reacts when I take it out instead of the hand auger come late January early February

My 1988 Jiffy cuts perfectly well with a newer 9" bit. However I tried it with an older 10" bit (slight wobble, sharp serrated chipper blade) and it does catch when breaking through the bottom of the ice. Can you get your hands on another bit or test-swap bits with anyone else's Jiffy?

I've been looking for a new bit at garage sales and on eBay I almost hand one last year but the guy wanted $40 for shipping he only lived 40 minutes away so I offered to come pick it up and hand him cash but he said no

When the point busts through the blades take a bigger bite and gets stuck. Mine  did that  until a local shop made them
super sharp...now not so much trouble.
