Visiting SDSU and Going fishing after
« on: Nov 28, 2014, 08:25 PM »
I am going on a college visit to SDSU next week Friday and will be done by 3 so would like to get out and fish somewhere close to Brookings that night. I will be staying and fishing Saturday and mabye even Sunday if we do okay. If anyone has any suggestions on where to go for bait and where to fish that would be awesome.  I have never fished the Brookings area but go to Webster 3-4 times a year so am somewhat familiar with the area. I am bringing the atv so transportation on the lake is not an issue.

SDSU has some ponds just north of campus. I used to fish on one of them while I went to school there and caught a fair amount or northerns. That has been about 10 years ago, so I don't know if you can still access the ponds or what, but someone from the area should.  There is also a little pond just south of town that we would catch northerns out of.

Is anything biting near Thompson or anywhere between Brookings and Thompson? I hear 81 ponds can be decent fishing and that's only a few miles away. Also where can I get bait in Brookings and is there anywhere close that you can stay that has a fish cleaning station?

Crappie are hitting on Schaffer's slough on the north end of Thompson , be careful of weak ice . Backroads bait in Lake Preston is a great place for info , there is some other bait shops in the area also just ask around and the local will point you in the right direction

Gas N' More right on 6th has bait, and that is where I would recommend. Otherwise I think Runnings has minnows but not near the selection.

Had a friend do okay by Webster yesterday so I might end up driving there Friday night and fishing around there all day Saturday and Sunday morning. I know the lakes up there better and like the option of lake hopping (quality lakes) instead of being stuck with fishing Thompson. Whatever I decide I will report back with how the trip went. If I like SDSU I will be back quite often learning about the area.

Do you like hunting and fishing?  Do you like a nursing program stocked yearly with good looking girls?  You will like SDSU

Brush and Goldsmith have been producing some good numbers but I've heard that you may have to sort. Goldsmith is located about a mile northwest of Volga for those that haven't heard of it.
