I’ve done that, already knowing there was over a foot, just wondering how much I would be drilling through. Sometimes ya might ask cause ya might need an extension on yer auger.

I know a lot of people go out on 3 or 4 inches, but I don't feel comfortable going more than 20 feet from shore when it's like that. I plan on 1/2 the ice that I find when I drill a hole until it gets really thick. Just because there are 3 inches in one spot doesn't mean that it's not an inch and a half somewhere else. If I measure 6 or 7, then I figure even if I walk over a thin spot, it should be enough to hold me.

Early in the season like that safety always comes first. I'll venture pretty far out, but I'm whackin the hell out a the ice with my chisel every few steps or so... and I dont go anywhere until I've determined its safe.

Yep! I’ve got a 15# spud with a sharp carbide blade. I pound the ice with it every couple steps. It cuts near 4# with one good whack. If it goes RIGHT THROUGH. I’v gone far enough.  ;D.
