My buddies and I just finished constructing the new shanty for the 2006 season!  We went 8x8 with an 8 foot front wall slanting down to a 6'3' rear wall.  It is sealed in this stuff called Dryvit, which is used to seal lumber before stucco is applied.  This stuff is awesome and creates a water tight seal on the entire outside and roof(It dries VERY BLUE, so we will be easy to spot!).  We installed an old storm door in the front wall as the only access.  It has two holes in the back that are 14"x29" inches for jigging/electronics.  We installed an old piece of countertop and built shelves below that for storage (Thanks, G!).  We installed corner shelves to hold the television, gloves, beer, food, etc.  The windows are not installed yet, but will be this week.  We are just going to cut holes in the sheathing and install plexi...quick and easy.  We are going to wire two lights on the rafters and a 12 volt bank of power adapters on the shelving.  The insulation is rigid foam and will be pressed in between the studs and glued between the rafters.  I'll post a few photos as soon as I can.  We are going to call her "Big Blue".

It took two days from a pile of sticks to near completion.  Total investment was about $400, but I had some donations.

Donations:

5 gallon bucket of Dryvit (awesome stuff)
8- 2x4x12 Pressure treated
One huge piece of rubber to cover the roof
8- 2x6x8
6- 2x4x8
Piece of countertop
storm door

Purchased:

2- 3/4x4x8 Pressure treated plywood (ouch!)
11- 3/8x4x8 plywood
5- 2x6x10
5- 2x6x8
Screws, screws,screws
paint rollers

Special thanks to Gary for the use of all of his tools, his truck and his valuable knowledge and experience!  Couldn't have done it without you!

You are all invited to the Shanty Warming Party, date TBD!!!!  Bring a chair and join in the festivities!

Here are a few pics to show you how it came out.  Just for you, Mac!

Yup, dropping her off at 'Toga for the winter!  Can't wait to have a little domicile out there to take the edge off, not to mention the ability to camp overnight.  Looking forward to it!

Looks great nice job ,but do you have a tractor trailer to pull it.Me and my buddy at work built a 5 X 8 with all 2X2s and 1/4 " plywood and that is still pretty heavy.Ours is bright blue also, and probably will be on sodus bay ice willing. Have fun and it sounds like your going to have alot of friends over to help you with that. walter_rev

They are going in this week some time.  Ran out of daylight and motivation last weekend.

Walter_Rev:  We estimated its' weight at about 700 pounds. Me and two buddies lifted one side, but it's definitely not light.  We are pulling it out on a trailer from a pop-up, with all of the camper stuff removed.  Real low to the ground.  Once it gets to the water, the trailer will be hooked to my buddies Sportsman and off we go.  Sounds easy, anyway. I may have to round up some Shanty folks from here and have  little shanty-moving party! ;D

Well, the boys and I worked on the shanty this past weekend, and accomplished a fair amount.

What we did:

Installed and wired (2) 55 watt halogen tractor lights to brighten the shack.
Installed the single piece of rubber on the roof.  Now she's water tight!
Installed 8- 12x24 inch Plexiglas windows, 3 on the left wall, 4 on the back wall, 1 near the stove on the right wall..
Hinges on the fishing doors.
Caulked all seams.
Built a storage area for the 20lb propane bottle.

Still needs to be done:

Install rigid insulation.
Plexi for front door.
(2) more windows on the left side above the cooking area.
Cut vents in soffit.
DRAG HER OUT ON THE ICE!!!

I'll try to post updated pics tomorrow morning.  She's coming along nicely.

Looks really nice, been up north in some rental and boys it blows em away, Just make sure you have enough space to turn a auger in you cut out floor. It looked kinda tight but it could be the photo.
Everything else looks top notch, nice work.
I bet some free beers would get some people out to help ya.

Well, finally got a chance to take some additional photos of the work we did over the weekend.  She's getting closer to completion:

Here are the windows in the back wall:

The left wall:

The backsplash for the stove, along with one of the new 12 volt lights:

The other 12 volt light on the back wall between the fishing holes:

The outside view of the left windows, along with the edge of the rubber roof we installed over the weekend.  It poured last night and not a drop in the shack:

That's about all for now.  We have the insulation left to install, and that will be about all, except for little creature comfort stuff here and there.

Buckski:

Yeah, the picture is a bit deceiving of the holes, they are 14x16 and 14 x14 respectively(under the same cover, they are split by the joist running underneath.  We have 2 separate covers as shown in the first set of photos). We use a 10 inch Strikemaster, so hopefully all will be well.

Well, the final preparations to the shanty were completed over the weekend by my buddies.  All in all, I couldn't be happier with the outcome!  All we need is to schedule the launch date, gather the crew and smash the champagne on her!  My buddies mom even made us some cool curtains.  Here are a few of the finished product that I took last night with my new digital camera ( a few of the outside are a little dark, sorry):

Hopefully a few times out with the friends from out west near Tanglefoot.  Bring the whole crew!  Gotta get everybody together to properly attract fish!!

Check!  We cut them in the soffits, one in the front and one in the back.  We have had numerous dry runs in that puppy and things have gone well.

yep, she looks sweet,   NOW all we need is some more COLD TEMPS.   the lake is running about 5" of ice and with some cold weather, it could be ready right after the new year.  ;D
I might be able to make it on a Sunday.  ;)
