ice gator auger heads.
« on: Sep 01, 2014, 12:02 AM »
I'm looking at maybe getting an ice gator ion battery head to put my 8in ht hand auger bit on it.Wanting something really light. I'm impressed with some of the videos with speed and so forth. What I am a little worried about is what customer service would be like or how it would be to get parts/service. Anyone have experiance? Thinking maybe an Ion or the new strikemaster would be way to go for service and dependability.

Kinda wanting an ice gator........steer me in the right direction guys.

I have a Gator - never needed parts in the 5 years I've had it.  I have called and emailed the owners several times about mods and adapters for different auger bits - always had prompt service.  It's not what I'd call "light weight" though.  I've seen the ION in action (right beside my Gator - no comparison.  The Gator is a "beast" -  when it comes to punching holes in ice, it is the "ticket".
Use a good sharp drill bit and treat it right, you won't have any problems.

I get about 60 holes thru 18in of ice with my Ion. Its half the price and half the weight of the Gator.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

if you get the gator with the ion battery the weight is about the same. and the price is also about the same. if you get the lead acid the gator is way cheaper and heavier.

Gotta factor in the price of a hand auger as well. Easily another 75-100$ for a good one..

Except for the fact that the OP already has that hand auger.  So there is no additional cost for him.

I did say a good hand auger.. Chances are he will buy a better auger for the Gator if he buys one...

Could also wait till the end of the season to buy the Ion, most stores have it marked 25% off and you save $125. Thats what i did.

And don't forget, with a Gator - you'll get those holes in about 1/2 to 2/3 the time.  :P

If I don't go with the gator, I've seen some pics of the new strikemaster electric ion auger. I'm thinking it would be the ticket. While the ion is prya fine, i don't like the handle design, worried it wouldn't fit in the shack sled nice.

I've had the HT auger next to a lot of other hand augers. It see,s just fine with the quality, it just depends on what type of blades you put on it. I think it would work fine on the gator.

This, from the head cheerleader for Ion.  Who does double duty as one of the main detractors for Ice Gator.

Kind of a pot and kettle sort of thing.

Except i have no affiliation, relation, or friendship with the makers of Ion. Can the same be said about the majority of those who praise icegator?

Well, I don't know a single proponent of IG that is in anyway affiliated with them.  The owners of IG are a family and as far as I know, have not included any outsiders in their venture - safe a year or two of trying it and returning to their roots.  You just need to meet them to understand their goodness and quest.
