For circle hooks youre right most haven't learned how to use them. Because here you don't have too.
Head down south and try fishing without them.  Tarpon for instance you'll struggle to land one without one. Their mouth feels like 36 grit sand paper and they have a large bony plate that will cut line in a couple minutes. So if not in the corner of the mouth its over.
Here.if I'm intentionally targeting pike With live bait i use them.
Otherwise nah.

circle hoohs are  great  for  trot  lines  and  even surf fishing  cut  bait  ......  but  on tip ups  ...screw that you'll hook up more  and land  more  with  small  triples .......
