MarCum Service
« on: Mar 12, 2014, 12:49 AM »
Well, just got to give MarCum a  for great customer service!  e-mailed them about a problem with my troller, the "Noise" filter adjutment quit working.  they sent an e-mail right back, appologized for the problem, sent me a RA# and address, and will upgrade my troller to the new version when they do the "fix", turn around time stated at 2-3 days!  first time I've had any issues with it, and didn't ask for the upgrade, that was free!  The upgrade will inhance my Troller to give me a bottom 6 ft zoom, battery indicator, and metric conversion ability!  that's nice!!

I've heard others state that they experienced bad customer service from MarCum, and it seems that that's the only time anyone says anything about anything, is when it's BAD news.  Just thought they deserved a little praise, at least from me!!

Don't pass judgment until you get it back working. If you read a lot of the threads on here about these types of issues the headaches don't start until you get the unit back and it still ain't right. I'm not trying to rain on your parade just saying what you can expect as I have been there done that.

I'm not gonna preach another brand like some but IMO the showdown units have some huge issues.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I've had my Showdown for three season now, and so far I've had no problems requiring customer service.

The one issue I've had with my Troller, and it is not unique to me, is that it is not as waterproof as Marcum advertizes it to be. Moisture gets inside the unit and causes some odd things to happen, such as the unit powering itself on, or not displaying information properly.

Taking the unit inside and opening the battery compartment between trips keeps this issue to a minimum, along with generally not letting it get wet.

A gentleman I fish with has had his sent in to marcum 5 times over two winters now. The initial problem turned out to be a loose connection in the socket the transducer plugs into. Marcum installed a new update in the software along with fixing the plug.  The unit has been messed up ever since.

Why is that it is always a "friend or my buddy's friend" that alway has these troubles?

I've had Marcum units (2) for 8 years now and no problems.
I know every Man. has it issues.

FWIW  :)

Funny post considering this thread began when the guy had an issue with the Marcum product he owns. After 23 years combined service with 3 vexilars, I could not tell you a thing about their customer service.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

What's funny is that I never mentioned Vexilar,if they never had any issues there would be no reason for a customer service dept.
Does Vex have one?

I'm just saying that every company does not have a perfect unit.
It is how they take care of the bad ones.
It's all a matter of choice.

I think everyone has a favorite, but usually just because that's what they have and use.  Like I had said in the original post, I've had mine a good number of years and used it all the time, both pond, small and large lakes and never had any issues with it.  One of my friends that goes with us to LOW got one, it had some trouble and they upgraded it, fixed the problems and his works very well!  No more issues, and he purchased from a private guy, didn't buy it new!  His was gone from home about 6 days, including the shipping!  Mine worked fine except the noise reduction button, and was still very usable.  I have run my time on the ice for this season, so figured it was time to get it in and get it fixed!  That way, I don't lose use time next season!  Someone stated about the unit not being as water proof. I don't have the 12 volt battery adaptor, just use the AA's.  They last me a good full day and a half with constant use. I made a carry/protector bag using a padded soft tackle bag.  the whole thing stores in it, and I don't need to remove it from the bag when in use.  Keeps the moisture off it, and it has never had troubles. (Also protects a little from the bumps of traveling). The transducer, I cut a piece of "swim noodle" to use as a float, and a thick rubber washer to use as a float adjustment.  this keeps from putting any undue stress on the connection on the back of the unit.

If I have any trouble with it's performance after I get it back, I'll post an update!  I will opt to have a little faith in the company, at this time anyway!

Just an update.  Recieved my Troller back from Marcum.  did the upgrade and fixed the Noise button!!  Took it to a pond and dropped the transducer in the water off a bridge over the pond.  About 12 ft deep.  the bottom zoom worked great!  The Noise reduction button worked like new!  Pleased as punch!! ;D  ( I did get a little worried, as poor service can happen with any company, Whew!!  Glad it was all worry for noth'n!!)

I had a power cord go on my marcum 825 sd camera, and warranty was up. I paid shipping to get it there, they paid shipping back, and replaced cord for free. I stepped on my transducer bracket on my lx5, and snapped it in two. They sent me a free one. Can't beat their customer service from my experience!!!

Totally AGREE!!  Have a Showdown that was getting some fog inside the LCD screen.  The unit is 3 years old.  Called and they said don't worry about the warranty.  I shipped and paid shipping.  They paid to send it back.  Replaced the screen seal, tested transducer and upgraded the software all with no charge!!!  Guys are awesome!!!
