Accidental Dinner...
« on: Mar 09, 2014, 06:40 PM »
I had a busy schedule today, one of the errands was going to Concord. As I drove on 202 past Powdermill I just couldn't resist... I already had my Bayrunner and all my stuff in the truck from yesterday but just grabbed my auger and a rod and ran across the street and out on the ice to a little hole I knew usually would have a few Crappie in. After about 10 minutes this big girl slammed my jig... and ate it. She came out of the hole fine but when I tried to get my jig back she started bleeding heavy. I never eat Bass but she wasn't going to survive so in the truck she went... plus I wanted that red dot glow Predator back lol. Not bad for a quick 20 minute session.

Never had one in my life..nice bass however
when chuck norris played golf for money, chuck marked down a hole in zero every time, the golf pro said, "chuck: you can't score zero on a hole." Chuck norris turned towards the man and said, "I'm chuck norris, the man proceeded to pour gas over his body and set himself on fire because that would be less painful than getting roundhouse kicked by chuck norris....chuck norris roundhouse kicked him in the face anyways

They aren't bad when pulled through ice, they're really just big pan fish. I would rather take a bucket of Yellows or Crappie outta the lake though, I think they taste a lot better... maybe because they are smaller/younger?

Nice fish. Some quality fish in that place. Hate that the screw with the water level there. Wish they left it low cause fishing seems better when they do. Never fished it thru the ice tho.

Nice fish!  Nothing wrong with a bass now and then for dinner. I love them from under the ice and cold water. The local pond in Merrimack is stuffed with undersized fish and a few times a winter we take enough home for a feed.

Nice fish. Always wanted to fish it since its pretty much in my backyard. Just like Nitro mentioned the water fluctuation and channel don't really excite me. How much ice was there if you do.t mind me asking.

I wish they would keep the water as high as possible while still being able to limbo my Nitro under the train tracks. We've gone under before when we had to pump the livewell full of water and push on the tracks to get the boat to sit a touch lower in the water to clear the windshields... perfect level LOL.

I'm not sure how thick the ice was, I didn't even bring my scooper just spun the auger backwards to clear slush from the hole... Had to be at least 14" though and I was about 200 feet from any currents. Be careful out there if you don't know the path the channel takes.

I've had to push on the tressel to get my nitro under too. I just like when I can see the stumps. Finally got navionics so probably could mark them all when its low. Maybe help me when water is up. You like that far end? Got one five from that end but all my other big ones come from this side of it.

Must be talking about naticook. I have fished that lake for 20 yrs and i always have a high count. There are alot of pigs in there also. People do a good job respecting the place and release the big ones.
Tight lines to all!

Yeah, the deepest waters are around the dam... big smallies like deep water, plus you can beach the boat, hoof it about 100 feet through the woods and cross the street to the store and get some fresh Chester fried chicken and a home made brownie. For largemouth though I do like the near side. What I really like though is paddling a canoe west from the ramp up the Contoocook with an ultralight. With good water level you can get about 5 miles up river.

Yeah the place sure does have some nice fish. Dint see many people trying it during the hardwater season. Thanks for the info. May have to give it a shot this week. The trestle can be a tough spot. Took someones life about 15 years ago on a sled.

That's a bummer... The Optimax motors shine like glass too. On mine with the livewell brimmed to the top and the motor trimmed down it's about 2" lower than the windshields. I've broken 3 stern lights over the years though... That miserable little tunnel in Hinsdale getting on to the Connecticut by the power plant got me twice.

I was surprised at the lack of activity today, only saw one other group and they had hiked a long ways to an area that honestly didn't make sense to me. This is only the second time I've ice fished it, last time was last year when the ice was much more questionable and the place was like swiss cheese holes and people everywhere.

I know a few groups of people that fish it from different spots than accessing it from 202. Deffinately don't think I'd go out there solo especially from 202. Props to you.

Had the other half of her for dinner last night, not nearly as good after a week in the freezer. Still pretty tasty though, kept it simple... rolled in panko and baked then topped with fresh coleslaw and onto a hogie roll. Gave the last couple pieces to the pup, she had no complaints lol.

bass definitely tastes better from cold water. I am usually a c+r guy but not opposed to taking one if you are going to eat it and it doesn't go to waste. looks delish. bon appetite!!!!

Nice job on the meals !!! Down here in Ct. this is the time to harvest a few !!
This IS the time of the year that I love to eat Bass, through the ice!!
When my Son was knee high, we would Ice Fish, and, if we caught LG mouth Bass,
it was Black Fry Pan, Salt, Pepper, Onions, & a little butter, Get Out Of Dodge !!!
That smile on my Son's face was worth a million !!!  Still is !!!
Never took more than a small meal, always conscious of the mortality thing,
but, damn, that is some fine eating !!!
Feel real sorry for those folks that do not know about the out of doors !!!

What have you got for an electric auger if you don't mind me asking?

No power auger, just a cheapo BPS hand unit. Still clears the hole just the same when spun backwards.
