Lakers.... Small body of water
« on: Mar 09, 2014, 12:37 PM »
I have had the opportunity to fish many small (and large) Adk waters this year .. Unbelievable to see the laker color difference from lake to lake .. I  saw fish with war wounds and golden in color ..skinny as heck ... To bright white   Fat and over stuffed with smelt .. Most of these lakes we have to ourselves 90% of the time .. Just the way we like it ...  Just curious how many different lakes have you landed keeper lakers on this year ?  Here's a 25 inch laker from yesterday afternoon .. And not from lake George ... The lake has no information about smelt being in it ... But he  puked up a handful ...

You don't look like a Jake...
"As I grow older, I've come to suspect that I have got it backwards, and that life, at its best, is a metaphor for fishing and writing. Or perhaps neither side of any metaphor is finally dominant, the one inextricably tied to its contrasting likeness, no longer merely a point of comparison but yoked in a new existence to its other self."

I've seen a bunch of size, color and fattiness differences out of the same hole!       ;D

I believe that they did stock the lake with some rainbow smelt a few years back. I use to have a shanty on there 8-9 years ago and we jigged them up near the island at times. are the lakers getting any bigger? at the time we use to get many short ones. may have to hit this one up before the season ends.

Our average this year has been 19 inches out of there ... I live 10 minutes away so I been trying to figure this lake out.. I was a little south of the Island but not in the deep hole ... Haven't seen any clouds if smelt but I could see them surviving in there .. We went out in the afternoon ...  Haven't targeted any other species in there yet

Have caught lakers on 5 different lakes, and the color range is unbelievable.  Lake George and Blue Mt.Lake have the nicest looking lakers around.

I think Piseco has the darkest lakers I've ever seen out of any  body of water in the adirondacks.   They seem to be getting bigger there too. I think raising the minimum size limit is helping.  But I think the biggest laker I have ever seen came out of lake Eaton.

I have only fished one lake for lakers this year.  Maybe I will improve on that this week.   In years past I have noticed a difference in the meat coloration. I have fished a few lakesin the adk where the meat is orange, almost as bright as a salmon. In the western finger lakes where I normally fish it is a much paler yellow. A different diet I assume?

I've caught them on 5 different lakes myself and yes I have noticed a difference in color between the lakes.

In the adirondacks, the more tanin in the water from the evergreens, the darker the fish.

I haven't been up there this year, but Raquette has some of the prettiest little lakers. They have amazing colors.

I agree that the same lake could have a wide array of looks.
