After wanting to for some time, I'm finally headed to Joes Pond tommorrow to try for some smelt. Any info on how it's been there or any tips on fishing there ?

We were there on Sunday fishing for perch/smelt/trout.  It was an absolute mess anywhere near the shoreline.  A foot of snow on top of a foot of slush/water.  This was just a day and a half after the big rain and thaw, so maybe it's drained off some and frozen up by now.  We were wearing snowshoes so we had no problem getting around on foot after my tracked ATV got stuck trying to drag our stuff out (this gives you an idea of how bad the conditions were), but the few other people that were out were having a tough time.  The fishing stunk to boot.  We had six or eight tip ups set with fatheads (on the bottom for perch and just under the ice for trout) and we were jigging too.  We only caught a few smallish perch and one smelt (which we put on a tip up).  I was marking fish on the sonar frequently but they just didn't want to bite.  We saw a couple of not too big browns caught on tip ups baited with smelt right along the shore (5-10 feet of water).  We caught a 5 lb brown in the same area last year, so they're in there.

I'm probably hitting it Saturday.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable,
a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

Me and my boy went yesterday. Real thick ice. Lots of snow but there is a plowed area by the access. Real real slow as far as the bite. Only got a couple smelt and perch. Was pulling up one smelt and something hit my hand line like a train and broke my line!  No idea what it was. Other than that the bite was terrible, we stayed all day. My search for a mess of smelt continues but it's not lookin too good. Not sure where to try next other than bomo and that's too far for me.

X2 on the pike.

We've done pretty well on smelt up at Salem Lake in Derby the last couple of times we've gone.

Daytime.  Halis with spikes.  We stayed a few hours after dark the last time out and caught nothing.

I still haven't done any night fishing. I've got an underwater light on order, looking forward to giving it a shot somewhere. :icefish: :icefish:
