Hyalite Reservoir Brookies......... more
« on: Dec 20, 2018, 10:56 AM »
Have been to Hyalite a few times this year and seem to have the brookies somewhat figured out but looking to find some of the Cutties.  It seems most fish off of the dam or at the boat ramp.  Any help in figuring them out , Day vs Night, Location, Bait? Thank you for your help ....

It's a big lake! The limit on brooks is 20 per day. I have caught way more than that but my best keeper day was 18 last season. Generally I keep them if they are 12-18 inches. Also throw back grayling. My biggest grayling may have been the state record.
The cutties  I keep are 18-20 inches and I usually catch 3 cuts to one brooks. Try a small piece of worm or add scent to your rigs. Use strike indicators on your tips. Though some try to swim away with your rod, others barely show a visible bite.

I find that the cuties are near the bottom or deeper water, while most of the brookies I catch are within 10 to 12 ft from the ice.  My buddy and I were there last week and hammered the brookies up top and caught 4 nice cutts off the bottom....we were straight off the boat ramp.

I have done my best work near the main picnic/campground by the dam. Nothing wildly huge but a bunch of cuts in the 12" range.  Using grubs and worms.  I like fishing Hyalite because its fun to put up the hut and watch the fish down on the bottom mess with your bait.

The sight fishing at hylite is the best- on most days I can see a glow jig on the bottom in 20'- I have found that I catch more cutthroat in 15+fow and brookies mostly in from there. Also by the dam/ east side more cutthroat- westside by the inlets more brookies.

Seems like you figured it out! And i agree,  the sight fishing is awesome
It doesn't sound that appealing to most people I talk to, but going out onto a frozen lake and staring into a hole for the day is my favorite thing to do.

Has anyone else found that there are more brookies on the West side of the reservoir.  It would seem to me that if they are found more in the shallower water the east side would be better -- based on the topo map.  It's been 41 years since I've been to Hyalite Res. but I'm planning a trip to there for Thursday because of the brook trout reports.

I havent fished the east side myself, nor do I often see people fishing over there. My best guess as to why they are on the west side is there are more springs and inlets (at least to my knowledge) on this side of the res. But for all I know they are just stacked up on the east side laughing at me haha. Good luck on Thursday!

unless I am thoroughly confused, the boat ramp is on the west side. Blackmore creek comes in from the west and enters the res just below the boat ramp. That is where I have had the most luck catching brookies.

Yup Northwest side of the reservoir is the boat ramp, another good spot for steady fishing is the little bay just to the south of the boat ramp/parking lot.  I've had pretty good luck catching small brookies where the creek comes in.
