questions on deep water fishin
« on: Jan 24, 2014, 05:28 PM »
I have some questions about headin deep for panfish.   I enjoy shallow water gill and crappie fishin, especially sight fishin!  my main question is if you are looking for deepwater/ suspended gills and or crappies...where do you begin? the basin can be a big place?  I speak mostly of the finger lakes area....silver conesus hoeoye canadice is where i will be most of the time.  I have a hummingbird flasher.  In most cases I assume you are not fishing structure....lot of bathtubs around here,  so what do you do when you get to you desired depth? ???    I want to make the walk to the "trench" on honeoye, but its alot of work to be cluless when you get there :P

Honestly once they settle into the basin around this time in many places it's a pain to stay on em. Crappie especially just constantly roam. Drill lots of holes just outside channels leading into the evening feeding areas. The key is to find them at night, they won't be too far from there out in the basin. Go with a bunch of guys and get drilling use search baits like small rattlin flyers to get their attention. Then it's time to hole hop.....

thanx slab..........seems like some stay over deep water at nite too........otherwise the shallows would be thick with them everywhere you go at nite?

No, certain shallow areas are better than others. Weed density, forage, proximity to deep water... They will move shallow

we would use a vex and move around spot checking until we found fish and set up on them for aprox. 15 min if they weren't active or to small we would move but unless we saw fish we didn't drop a line. I know its not new knowledge but it still works. if the ice is to thick to read through we bring a 4in auger to punch fast holes for the trasducer  or a power auger so you aren't burned out by the end of the day because you may be punching a lot of holes, and again not new info (I know) good luck
