spikes storage
« on: Jan 20, 2014, 07:57 AM »
ok. I bought some spikes last weekend. transferred them into a bait puck and placed in back of fridge. 33*. I opened it up yesterday and saw that 2 had turned into cocoons. thought that this was not supposed to happen at that temp?

sounds like you bought old ones that were getting ready to die
i throw out brown/black ones mostly if i buy colored
you might not have kept them cold enough while you had them on you
i have had a bunch for  over a month and none have changed/died and i use insulated bait pucks and they go straight into the fridge when i get home and i try to keep them the same temp all of the time
my fridge is 38 degrees. always in the same container

have not lost any other than the 2 that pupated. all are still quite lively. I had thermometer next to the bait buck and it reads 33*. I have read somewhere that someone even uses these on their hooks along with some live ones. adds scent

I keep mine in fridge    Keep in a dlb zip lock with all the air pushed out. Got 1000 in late November and they are all ( what's left) still doing good.

Perfect. Those two might have just gotten too warm between the bait shop and your fridge. Every time I go fishing 1 or 2 spikes turn hard.

Make sure you take the pupated ones out right away... and don't toss them in the garbage in the house, toss them outside.
