Simcoe Herrring

Just curious to hear from those that are catching them. These fish were my fish of choice during the hard water season. They have been closed now for some years,I believe the last 8.I have caught numerous down rigg,n for lakers and whities, and the size differences are widely spread.I think the smallest I got this season was around 10 inches and the largest being close to 16 or so.They have made a remarkable come back, but I don't think the season on these fish should be open just yet.Another 5-7  years would most likely put the population back to at least half of what was there in the late 60,s earlly 70,s.When the ol boys use to fly fish for them right off their yard docks.
The days of seeing black clouds of them, I'm sure are gone for ever.

I got one last winter at Roches about 15 inches.  The year before I got on at BBP a little smaller.  I hear there used to be tonnes of them.  It would be nice if they make a rebound

Hey Misfish, there are plenty of Herring in GB, that you can target.  These were caught last year a stones through from my place, right under the ice ;D

Those are some nice eats there Sawlog.I sometimes smoke them, but alot of times I just split them and salt and pepper and add some smoke flavor.

I guess it would be fair to say that, most would get them threw the ice if their not getting out and doing what I do alot of in the summer in the boat. There have been times when I marked alot of fish in a few areas, and for the past two years it has been at the same time. All the marks are herring, except those real big ones that are lakers.Didn't matter what spoon we would troll with, they would hit it.

The bigger of the two is the blue back and the other is the sand back.Thats what I have always been told anyways.

One story I,ll share and I thought was pretty cool. When I first moved to Barrie I put a hut out in the bay here, and no word of a lie,on any given day, I could go out there, drop a spoon down to 30-35 ft.Watch the sonar and after a 10 or so jigs of the stick,I could see the fish starting to move in.Once I seen they were there good,I would bring up the line til I could see the spoon and then start to catch them. You would not believe how active and aggressive these fish hit, when their in a school. On the other hand, if you have 2-4 come in,alot of times they will cirlce the spoon and take sometime before hitting.

Well seeing that you need a herring fix, we can make a day of it this winter ;). Gave those to a friend for his smoker. They have a stronger slime smell than musky :o I noticed.  Your right about them being aggressive, once they come in ;D Now that I got a snowmobile we could target lakers and herring in a few spots that that are pretty close to me ;D Didn't realize til last year that they were hurting on Simcoe for em, geuss time, pressure and invasive species really put a damper on it out your way ???  Sure was fun fishing em though ;D Tightlines ;D
