Pro4 question- Fuel delivery system
« on: Dec 27, 2013, 09:45 AM »
I'm not sure anyone other than Jiffy would know the answer to this one.... but I'll ask anyway.

I have a Gen 2 Pro4.  The propane hose fittings leak between the tank & Regulator.  Can I update to the Gen 3 regulator & hose?  Benefit here is the system is all at regulator pressure, not off the bottle.  There may be other benefits as well.

3rd generation is this year.  The tank threads onto the regulator.  No hose between them.

I just looked over a 3rd gen at the tackle shop. From what I saw it does still have a fuel line/hose for delivery. It is just a lot shorter than the 2nd gen is. I didn't examine it in detail but I think the carb is turned at a different angle and the regulator threads directly in to the carb. The hose is short and I believe the tank is  mounted on the same side of the engine but the threads on the tank would now face the carb... which makes more sense. Engine looks the same. Don't quote me on this but I would think the carb and regulator are the same so you would need fittings and a hose and have to flip the tank "bracket" to the other side. If you can find one in a store, look it over, I don't think it is a big stretch to change over, maybe cost a few $'s for parts and a little time for a DIY'er. My 2nd gen hasn't started leaking but if it does I may look into the conversion also. Depending on how the 3rd gen delivery system holds up.
It must be something in the water.

I may just order the replacement 2nd Gen, then if problem comes up again, then look more into a change.

I have the 2nd gen. There is a hose clamp just after the regulator that is supposed to bolt through the plastic muffler guard, through an engine heat deflector and into the engine block. I don't know if the wrong thread bolt was used or if it was just not long enough but I could never get it to thread into the block which would secure the hose decently. I swapped it for a SS bolt that just goes through the hose clamp, muffler guard and heat deflector and placed a nylok nut on the bolt and it is holding tight... although it was a bit of a PITA. Jiffy obviously had engineering issues with this fuel delivery system since it has changed 3 times in 4 years.
It must be something in the water.

My pro 4 is leaking on both hose connections. I think I will plumb it myself unless you guys tell me otherwise. Any ideas?

There's another thread on here with a guy who just bought a pro4 and is having problems with it and it looks like it could be related to the new changes. Have you guys seen that thread?

The new parts come Thursday the following week.  I got a chance to put them in yesterday.  Total pain in the ass, but it got done.  The bolt on the bottom of the motor holding the clamp & exhaust shield was the worst.  4 pulls on the rope- started and ran as good as ever.
Now I have an extra regulator, so I may try to rig up a different hose to it.

Keep an eye on that hose clamp, I'd check it after each outing. My theory is that it vibrates loose and then doesn't do the job it is suppose to. Then when you swap tanks in the cold, that hose is stiff and if the clamp is not holding... the fitting is subject to damage.
I never unhook my tank until I'm ready to swap for another. Another one of my theories is that it shouldn't leak and if it does I'll notice it via the tank being empty and therefore should require repair. Also, unhooking & hooking up the tank each time puts more frequent stress to the hose and fittings... especially when the hose is cold and stiff. JMO.

This is a link showing the differences in generations. I like the 2nd gen system. Not to fond of the regulator being able to flop around like a dying fish.

Yes, I did my first Gen 1 to a Gen 3 Three days ago and yesterday did a Gen2  to a Gen3  yesterday. It is so much easier on the Gen 1 you just take the complete system off and change the wing handle, install the new Gen 3 hose/regulator. On a  Gen 2 conversion you have to also replace the Carb and the Breather tube. This drives the cost up about another $40 or so.  Do a search on the Gen 1 to Gen 3 conversion on the Maine board, its like on the second or 3rd page right know I have some pics there, can't figure out how to with this iPad. To Me its the way to go on the gen 1 its actually cheaper to buy the wing handle and cheaper for the Gen 3 hose assembly, because their is so little labor time, That Gen 1 system took me an 1 hour plus to repair properly and the thing it runs so much better. ~ Go to the Maine board ~ Marcel

Thanks.  I did just end up replacing with the Gen 2 system.  It worked great.

Down side... I FINALLY found out how cold is too cold for the Pro4...... Upper Red Lake in the "Polar Vortex" on sunday.  -31F was too cold.  It would run, and cut for 10-15 seconds at a time.  I found shaking the powerhead when the power dropped off would keep it going.    It did fare better than the diesel truck one of the guys drove on the trip.  Battled it for 3 days before throwing in a new fuel filter.  Ran like a champ then.
