Good Gloves?
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 08:54 AM »
I was wondering if anyone out there has suggestions on good ice fishing gloves. I am shopping for new gloves and I would like something with good water resistance/waterproofing, decent insulation, and good dexterity. Some thing I can keep on while handling fish and dealing with line. it also would be fantastic if the gloves could double as hunting gloves (thin enough to flip a safety off quickly and fit inside a trigger guard). I know this might be a lot to ask of a glove, but there might be someone out there who knows of a good product. The local sporting goods store selection is slim to none. So I have to shop online. As you may know that makes it pretty hard to try them on and feel them out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you hit it on the head by saying it is a lot to ask of a glove. If you want super warm, get Eskimo mittens; however you lose all feel and dexterity. The best feel are thin gloves that are not warm enough or waterproof. The best "all around" glove that I have found are neoprene gloves. They seem to still keep my hands warm even when a little wet; you have pretty good feel too. You will not be able to tie a fishing knot with them though. There is always a trade off.

Get a pair of neoprene mittens that the end flips over and your fingers are cut  out.  They look like shooting mittens for hunting but are neoprene and are warm.

i have tried many, including rubber/neoprene, but those get as cold as the air is.
i used to wear full length gloves that you take off when you get a fish. i tried gloves you are supposed to leave on when taking a fish off.

my go to gloves are half length fingers with a mitten cover to bring down over the fingers and one cover for over your thumb. i have a few different pairs of them. the last pair are made by simms from http://www.fishusa.com/Product/Simms-Freestone-Foldover-Mitts and are fleece. the other are rag wool from amazon with hand warmer pockets to keep hand warmers in the mit so if your finger tips get cold, you bring the mit down with a hot warmer in it touching your finger print side of you gloves.

The Neoprene gloves won't do much under these conditions.  As someone said, your wish list is extensive.

How bout :

or substitute a Zippo for the chemical warmers?  I use these hand muffs for duck hunting and ice fishing - work well....

Not sure if their still made but I use a pair arctic shield glo mitts.  They use the same material as spacesuits they claim. They are light weight and have exposed fingers. I put a pair of jersey gloves in them and cut the fingers I need out for bowhunting mainly.  Their really warm and I've never had a problem except when I left them by a treestand for a winter and didn't have them for ice season. That's when I bought a pair of castle rizer gloves and they are amazing in the cold just not for bowhunting!!!

The best glove I have found are made by Swany.  They are a ski/snowboard company mainly but the gloves are very waterproof, give good dexterity, and extremely warm.

Look at www.trophyglove.com for warm gloves. I have the T909 and I don't get cold fingers at all.

I personally can't stand neoprene gloves. Hands sweat so much inside then the cold air makes them just as cold. Worse yet, because of the sweat & moisture you can't get them off.

Who needs gloves when the fish are bitting? LOL!  I use a wool fingerless with the mitton flap.  I recently added an old golf bag towel to hold the wet fish while I take the hook out.  Works well for me with gloves or without and the clasp hook on my jacket so it's not soaking in the snow and ice

Thanks for so many replies. I know I'm looking for a lot in a glove but I figured if it was out there, you all would be the ones that would know.
I'm hearing some of the types I was looking into so I think I'm on the right track, but I'll need to look up some of the suggestions that came up too.
As far as my requirements, I never thought that I'd be able to tie line with the gloves on, but I just didn't want to take them off for every damn thing. Flip up mittens with fingerless liners are certainly about the warmest way to go, but that still leaves the liners getting wet on me if I have to handle a fish or something wet. The suggestion of a second set of liners to switch out the wet ones sounds like my current strategy. My current light gloves suck up water at an alarming rate, so honestly any upgrade is welcome.
Gloves with heat pack insert pockets certainly are tempting... hmm.
Thanks again, it looks like I have some candidates to check out.

I've tried alot of differant set ups.. this one works the best for me...

Are the reg. gloves better then the ultra gloves? I got the ultra because they came up over my sleeves, but it don't look like they will last long.  :-\

I like the Outdoor Research gripper glove. It's made of Gore Windstopper fleece. Keeps my hands warm in any weather and it is thin with enough dexterity to tie my boots. They are not waterproof but they keep my hands warm when they are wet.

I buy Gordini Gortex/Thinsulate   Ski gloves. If you wait till the end of the season you can get them for 20-30 $  at a store called Willie ski . Best part is the dark colors never sell. Black/ camo are always leftover.
