Ice auger drill mod
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 04:19 PM »
Has anyone had success using a  battery drill with Mod adapter on a crank auger, I tried with 18 volt 3/8" drill using a mora strike master 7" it keeps walking not grabbing ice also tried 1/2 " hammer drill same result, I suspect my blades are dulled out or a 6" auger may work better ?

You're auger might be a little big/dull. I have an 18v Dewalt 1/2 inch chuck paired with a 5" Lazer. I get around 35 holes in 4" of ice with one battery. Works like a charm. I just have a cheap adapter too, no special gearing or bearings or anything. Make sure the drill is set to "low" gear, high torgue low speed. Not high speed low torque.

Thanks for your input, are there any issues with landing bigger fish with a 5" hole, I caught some bigger pickerel at Lk Hopatcong  two years ago  and had no trouble with 7" hole.

There is a video on the jersey board of me pulling a 27 inch pickerel through it, and all though you here me say "I hope the hole is big enough", it came through with little problems. I've also pulled 3 pound bass and 14 inch crappie through it. That said, I wouldn't mind a 6" just because fish get wrapped in my transducer alot

Is that the blue auger?   If it is then it probably got bent. Someone hitting it on the ice.  Throws the blades off angle and it walks all over.

Get new blades. Carry a spare set, or at least have them in the car. You can't touch them up yourself.

Never, ever, ever let some knucklehead touch your auger. You need a light touch putting the blade to the ice, never, ever bang it down. Treat it well and you will never be sorry.

I cut with a five, carry a gaff, barb bent down, and only lip gaff. Only once in forty years a had to cut the hole bigger, and the gaff got me the 8.5 bass for a kiss and quick release.

If you respect the blade, it won't fail you. I've cut for years with the same five/six inch mora hand drill, same blades year after year and rarely if ever had a problem. Grease the blades at seasons end, carefully, grease a cloth and wrap the business end and stow them for next season.
