Farm pond fun
« on: Dec 28, 2013, 05:55 PM »
Had some good fishing the last few days at some local farm ponds in SE IA. Thursday we had a ton of marks, a few takers which ended up being very nice gills. Today we went to a different pond a few miles away and there weren't as many marks but what did show up was hungry. Ended up catching probably 15-20 gills with 90% being over 8" and a few touching 10". Great day to be on the ice and take some people that had never been.

Nice work. I love taking people that have never gone before. Especially love seeing their face when it starts stress cracking and they have no idea what is going on! I took a guy last week for his first time. We were the first people of the year to fish it and while we were sitting in the tent a crack came through right across both our holes. I've never seen anyone move so fast to try and get out of a tent!

How do you guys find all these farm ponds to fish? Are you the owners, family or friends, or do you just drive around find them and then ask the owners?

I get on google maps and search. Then go to the county's assessors page to find the owner. Then go ask the owner. Usually have a 12 pack. Or offer some of your catch. I would say my experience is 90% of the time it's a yes.  And don't ever leave a mess.

Family friends had both of these ponds. General rules have been covered though, be courteous, clean up, and you should find some. When it comes to private ponds I've had a few say yep go for it, some say sure but can't keep anything, and some say nope never let anyone fish it.
