Off-ground sled storage....
« on: Nov 14, 2013, 12:40 PM »
Anyone ever rig a pulley system to store their sled just below the ceiling of their garage?  If so, can you please describe design and show pics?  I would like to do this to declutter my garage and am looking for ideas.  Thanks.

Are you planing on leaving your gear and auger in it? Might make it tough getting it raised up.

i do not have a garage ceiling, so nope i have not tried it.
i do have too many bikes and use Bicycle Lifts w/rope/pulleys and get the kits from harbor freight for about 6 bucks.
get two of them and secure it to a floor/ply wood to raise it all up.

I use the exact one that 3300 mentioned above at the rear end of the hut.  The front end has a simple double pulley in the middle by the tow bar with some 550 para cord.  It keeps it under the ceiling and away from any mice and gives you a lot more floor space.  If I can find my camera, I'll take a couple of shots.

That item from HF only is rated at 44#. If your just talkin about an empty sled maybe I'd use something like that. I have an Otter Wild Cabin and a Otter Pro XT 1200 Lodge and both hang from Racor PHL-1R. They are rated at 250# and with a drill attached I can have them have them up or down really fast.

welcome to the shanty!

i think the rating would placed upon the hooks that are flat stock and bent to grip handle bars and seats. thats what i would alter to use it on plywood or tubs. if its the rope, you can add larger rope.

using a drill sounds cool to lower/lift stuff. i don't have a need. Husker95 does tho

Not in garage, but in shed. Works great, mice can't get to it, and it's out of the way.

Seems like as good of thread as any to make my first post, been following the site for a while; some great ideas have come from this site, looking forward to being a part of it.
I installed a Racor lift (bought off of Amazon) in the garage. With my frabill max on it, I can get it off the ground and above the garage door when it opens.  In winter I put some summer items on it to free up floor space to keep the sled on the ground. Up and down with a drill.

Yes, I bought the Racor Heavylift Storage Platform specifically for my two man shack and all the crap I could fit inside of it.  I love it.  I can use a drill to operate it up and down.  Kind a process to get it put together on the ceiling but totally worth it.  I bought mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond Online for 20% off if you apply for online updated through their website.  Scope it out on Home Depots website they have some good reviews of it, once you see it you will definitely want one.

Hi Lyontyl .  Thanks for the info.. I checked it out as you mentioned..

Found this  - http://www.google.ca/search?q=Racor+Heavylift+Storage+Platform&client=safari&rls=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=aImHUrXWKqTniAKA74D4Dg&ved=0CEsQsAQ&biw=1251&bih=689

I could have used that system, years ago when I had the hard top for my jeep.  It should be able to hang a sled easy.

I've used the Racor bicycle lift for the last few years. I removed the hanging brackets used for bicycles. I added a rope to the back of my sled so I can pull it in both on the ice. I just run the ropes through the holes on the brackets and tie a knot. It's not the best or easiest way to hook up the sled to the rack. But it works. It goes up easy but sometimes while trying to lower it, the safety latch will grab the rope and lock up. You have to make sure the rope is vertical so it doesn't grab the latch. I thought about adding an old boat winch and removing the latch...just haven't done it yet.
