Dang snow!!!
« on: Dec 12, 2013, 12:16 PM »
Just checked the ice today after the couple days of our VERY cold weather and of course cuz of all the snow piling on top of my lakes, it's still only 3"  :'( and with the upcoming snow storm that's about to hit us, how much of an effect will the snow have on the lake's ice in it's current condition?

When it's clear black ice, I'll fish on 3" no problem.  I spent around 5 hours on the ice yesterday and it was 3" everywhere I drilled.  Never had a problem with the ice feeling weak or cracking.

Obviously every body of water is different, so take precautions when you go out.  I wear my life jacket during early and late ice.

Oh I know, I've been on the ice a couple days ago on 2.5" but with the snow that coming in the next couple days, I'm getting worried for the amounts of insulation lying on top of the ice and how it will affect it overall.

snow isulates yes, with the cold temps and with the little snow we have will slow the ice process a bit. most of the time it will weigh the ice down then you are fishing in water. lol as for making ice yes it will make ice it just slows the process... be safe and buddy up

Think I will go pop some holes once snow is done just to try and flood a few of the ponds I want to fish.  Then they will get some ice one way or another.  lol

Wet snow might enable a canal area trip Sunday.  Plenty ice.

Got out to canal, almost 8" but the bite died by noon. Went to mautinos and flooded one pond in hopes next weekend will be able to fish it
