Is the ice OK?? After all that rain I might not make it!! I'm thinking sunday if I can find out how the ice fared through our all day downpour! Damn weather! I would love to get out but not unless I've got a minimum of 4" solid ice. Dad told me yesterday that when he went by gravelpit was open 20' out! What's the real story? I'm not killing gas money to drive out there and find out I can't fish!

Well it looked good a couple days ago. I walked out quite a distance from shore and jumped up and down. No cracking or sagging. I tossed a huge rock out to the middle and it bounced off the ice. I will be going out tomorrow so will check it out again for you. The temp didn't get much above freezing today. This rain will sit on top then freeze tonight thereby making the ice thicker. The ice was a little different color out there near the middle but the 20lb rock didn't go thru. Hope your dad didn't make a judgement from the highway. I will take my picks and auger tomorrow and post a pic for you ;D

That would be great TGF. We only fish about 30 yards from the parking lot along the shore there. You know about where I'm sure. Ya dad was driving by. I didn't really believe him as you said you had actually been standing on it. I'd like to have 4" but if it will hold you then I should be OK, I only weigh in at 150 lbs ;D I was hoping it would get cold enough for the rain to freeze on top of the ice but I din't know if it got cold enough last night. If it goes down above -5 tonight I will definitely be out sunday morning around 7:30am with my buddy Andrew. I don't have ice picks...where can a guy buy them?? Or better yet how would you make them?

Just get a couple 3 inch nails and duct tape them to a piece of wood with 1.5 inches sticking out the end. Try and make a groove to hold the nail head from slipping up. Drill some holes in the end of the sticks and put rope thru them to hang around your neck. You can use bigger nails but apparently you know exactly what 3 inches is so go with that ;D.
Or you can go to wallmart or outdoors place and spend about 10 bucks. Money well spent if it pulls you out of the drink. Or save 10 bucks and put in your gas tank, if you make your own.

Thanks. Couldn't I just whack nails through a piece of wood and forget the tape? Any info on the ice conditions??

I was thinking of a 9" tree spike..... ::) :woot: :woot: Didn't need them although it was definitely a good idea to watch where you stepped.
