floors for pop ups
« on: Dec 01, 2013, 07:49 PM »
I fish out of a pop up hut. I am looking for some ideas for a floor. Something to keep my feet off the ice. Last season I was using an old piece of carpet but when it would get soaked with water it wasn't much help

How about a anti fatigue mat for workbenches etc? They are light and
not too big

I've seen rubber floor mats sprayed with gravel guard, it kinda turns the slippery rubber mat into a giant piece of sand paper and I have seen those foam interlocking mats that you get from the kids toy section in department stores.

I use 2'x3' pieces of OSB (particle board 1/2")  I put them on the sides of my sled horizontally to hold more stuff in my sled.  I thought about using some roll on truck bed liner to give them a little grip & durability over the season.  On the back I drilled small's holes and run a bunjee across to hold them more upright and stable when transporting gear to and from the lake.  Helps keep my stuff from falling out.  Plus it gives my little guy a place to sit when he tags along

I got these last year, and they work great. Very light, but comfortable.  Help keep feet warmer by keeping them off the ice.

As already noted interlocking foam mats work great.

Exactly what I use.  A couple of 3' x 3' takes care of me and my buddy.  You don't have to do the whole floor - just where you place your feet.  I do put my heater up on a plastic crate so the ice doesn't melt in front of it.

When I do over nights in my pop up I just put down a tarp, put old blankets down and away I go. All folds up nice and my feet stay dry.

Go to Wally World and buy a set of inexpensive rubber car mats.  They work just fine.  Cut to any size that you need.  That's what I use in my Otter two man.  One mat in front of each seat.

I use 3ft x 4ft outdoor rugs in my 6x12 pop-up.  I have been considering this winter to use Dricor tiles for overnight stays.

If you have them: Tractor Supply Stores have Stall mats. Just type in Rubber mat in their search.
Or this stuff cut at 2' long. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/rb-rubber-multi-mat-rolled-rubber-3-8-in-thick-sold-by-the-foot
Cost $15.38 for 2 feet. Each person would need one.

I picked up a couple of sleeping mats, G.I. issue, from sportsmans guide. Made up of  some closed cell foam. They roll up nicely and serve double duty as sleeping mats in the summer.
Yeah, yeah, yeah....FIVE more minutes, That's all, Then we'll go.

I got some mats from Walmart in the exercise area. They are in a package and can be connected together in 2ft peaces. I then screwed short 1/4 head screws in the bottom so they don't slide. They are made of the foam rubber so they are pretty lite.

We went a tad overboard with ours, but built a floor with particle board top and bottom and 2x2's for supports.  Put hinges on it down the middle so we can fold in half and use as an extra "sled." A little spray foam in for insulation then cut out and hinge holes in the four corners.  Had it out last year in -20's, stayed very warm and dry.  Taking it out tomorrow night as we're looking at -15 or so.  I think we spent two hours making it and maybe $40 for materials but if you're looking at negative temps and overnighters, it's sure nice to have.

I use a carpet segment during early ice but when I can drive my truck out I have a piece of the rubber mats used at hockey rinks. It is heavy but when you get it laid down inside it is very comfortable to get your feet on.

Thinking about getting this for myself for my flip over.  It is made for use on the floor of hunting shacks and shanties so I assume it will do the job.  It covers a 60" x 60" area so it is larger and it says it is easily cut so you can cut out areas for holes or to the exact size you want it.

I've used car floor mats with a piece of pink foam.  Feet stay much warmer.

The floor in my hub tent has been getting wet from the melting ice from the heater.
This year I took a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood   cut it down to 6 feet then cut it in half and hinged those two pieces.
Now when it is folded up it will fit on top of my sled for a hard cover and when at location it will fold open covering up the floor less the last 2 feet where the hole are.
Hopefully this  will help you .

I found one of those foam squares that puzzle together on the ice I guess someone lost it.. I use it now. It helps allot one square under my feet in the hut. I take it to the holes and kneel on it too .. It makes a huge difference when you have bad knees to begin with.. And your feet off the ice are much easier to keep warm.. I do not think they sell them individual, buy a 6 pack and share with friends.
