Pop up shanties
« on: Sep 29, 2013, 08:35 AM »
I've been thinking about buying a pop up shanty by frabill that costs 150$ but before I buy it I have a few questions.
1. Do they keep you that much warmer?

2. Can you put a heater in them?

3. Is worth buying?
Thank you

YES ...... they do keep you warm ....they also dont make you move ....great base camps ....I set mine up and use as a wind break ..and warm up station . i have a Clam 6800(w/floor) and a Frabill headquaters . the farbill w/its black colored denier heats up quite weel all on its own. You can use a heater in them ..just get it off the ice so it dosent get as wet in there ...overturned bucket works great

Yeah, in the right conditions ,you can reach speeds of 20+ mph and an altitude of 6+ feet, if you don't drag your feet and you keep the ballast to a minimum. ;)
Being on ice is nice but the tug is the drug.

Yes, they keep you warm. I have one from Cabelas, took it to Moosehead last February.  Couple of other guys had similar ones too.  Convenient, easy to transport in sled, anchors in the ice well, heated up nicely.  Would recommend it.

Mine keeps me pretty warm, it's just a pain sometimes when setting it up when it's cold and windy out and like hardwater diehard said, it's great as a base camp if you want to run and gun around the lake and set up tip-ups and then going in to warm up a bit and jig in there.

I have fished with guys that have them and unless I wanted to set it up to sleep in, I will stick with my flip over... I move to much.

1. Yes
2. Yes, but I find that when it's not really cold out just body heat and the lack of wind make it warm enough to remove hat, gloves, jacket, etc.
3. Yes.  Once you warm yourself up in one a few times you'll know for sure it was money well spent.

I got one last year.  its a no name brand (killzone or something like that)  it was 189, and its awesome.  Its great to have a base camp during derbies, or days when you plan to fish sun up to sun down.  One thing that is tough is setting up in the wind, but the more you do it the easier it gets.  Its also great to keep the complainers in your fishing group quiet  :P

Make sure you anchor that down or it will end up becoming the kite on the lake.

I have used a Eskimo quick fish 3 for the last few years and it works.  It can be a pain to setup if its windy.  One reccomendation if you get one is to make sure you have a few extra anchors.  Mine came with 6 and I bought 2 more and have used them all a few times.  I pack snow around the base to keep cold air out. The nice thing is they are lightweight and for in any vehicle.  Bad thing is once set up its pretty much a stay here kinda thing, gets to be a pain to move around.

I have a flip over it only takes a couple of minutes to set up. Works great to get out of the wind also have a heater for the colder days. Another reason I use it is to block the wind from blowing out the flame on my grill while cooking. Great investment!

They are awesome. Only thing is you need a vehicle it will fit in.  Right now my car won't cut it.

I use a pop-up deer hunting blind. It's big enough for 2 people provided they aren't real big guys, which I ain't. I like to stay mobile so I only use it when it's brutal cold and windy. I screw it down to the ice with 4" Tapcon screws. I don't have a heater, but it stays plenty warm inside even without the bottom flaps. I'll probably pick up a 4 man hub this year though, more room means more comfort waiting for flags to pop!

BassMaster, the type of fisherman you are should be taken into consideration.

If you like to Run and Gun, and hunt down the fish, you may find a pop up wont accommodate you as well as a flip over like stripernut stated.

I picked up a Clam Trapper last season and it fist in the back of my hatchback.

So basically, if you move around alot, look into the Flip Overs
If you set'em and forget'em, a pop up is probably better. All be it much harder to setup/use than a flip over as well.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

I'm more of a set em and forget em, so I think I'll go with a pop up. Thanks for the advice

hmmm. makes sense. I might have to pick up a 2 man flip-over for the run and gun type of days, and on days I plan to stay put, I can bring the pop-up. Good thing some pop-ups fold up small. Mine packs up into a backpack.

for what its worth....I picked up a pullover last year - two seater Gentz model by clam, used it a few times and this is what I learned.
- its heavy which makes it a pain in the ass to get in and out of the truck
- its built atop a sled so it pulls nice, but still heavy.
- decent amount of storage.
- although it has two seats, I cant see you and your buddy sitting butt too nut and being comfortable.
- overall height is short, and if your in and out, its a pain.
- because of its size, it warms up quickly with a single burner on, but produced condensate rather quickly.
- If you sit on a pail and jig, this pullover would hands down kick ass.

I used it more for a warming tent for the kids and a wind break for cooking, so i'm looking at the quickfish line by Eskimo....got touchy feely with one at the cove gathering last year......just waiting to pull the trigger.
looks like my pullover will be on craigslist soon......

I debated over a two or a one man for a while.

What it came down to was weight. The two man units are HEAVY!!

My one man trapper weights about 30lbs empty. You would be hard pressed to find any sled that weights less.

I bought a clam vista yesterday. It weighs 30lbs, fits in the bag, sets up easily, it's the perfect size, and I couldn't be happier with the way it! Lets just hope it performs well

Nice choice Ben.  I have the Clam Thermal which is a little heaver with the same dimensions.  You might want to look into the Clam harness.  You can gear up with a large sled.  The enclosed instructions explane how to run the pull straps through plastic conduit.  When walking down hill the conduit stops the sled from running up on you.  The ability to lean away from the sled without twisting allows you to pull more with much less effort and fatigue.  It really does work:

Thanks man. Ill look into it, it looks pretty cheep, but the bag the clam vista comes in fits into my jet sled and the back of my kubota rtv no problem.
