Can't decide which shelter to buy
« on: Nov 11, 2013, 11:06 AM »
I am in the market for a hub style pop up shelter. After looking at a lot of different options I think I have narrowed it down to a few options. One option I have looked at is the Clam Bigfoot XL4000T. The reviews seem to be pretty good, with exception of the zippers. My other options that I am looking at are the Eskimo Quickfish 3i or the Fatfish 949i. I had a Clam 2000 last year and I was pretty dissapointed in the quality of the shelter, which makes me nervous about going with a Clam again. However, the reviews I have read for the Eskimo haven't been very positive. The 949 being much worse than the quickfish. Do you guys have any opinions on these shelters or any other ones to look at? I would really like an insulated one, and I need the packability and portability of the hub style, so a flip over isn't an option. Thanks guys for any help

I've owned hubs from Clam, Eastman and Eskimo.  So far, I like the Fatfish the best of the three.  I have the 767.  I usually fish alone and it is a great 1 man setup.  You can fish two in it but you just have to be organized.  Sit next to each other in the middle and face opposite directions is what I have found to work best.  The primary reasons I like the Fatfish are performance in the wind and the anchors.  Eskimo is known to have the best anchors of any of the hub manufacturers.  In terms of wind performance, the Fatfish is smaller on the top and so the sides slope up which I think sheds the wind better than the more "flat" sided hub shelters.  Also, the 767 is shorter than the 949 so you have less side surface area for the wind to hit but you do sacrifice headroom.  Pros and cons to each of the units but I personally prefer the fatfish 767 for the reasons I mentioned above.

I would love to have a flip shelter, but like I said in my op that is just not an option unfortunately. I think I am going to go with the Fatfish 949i. It is a little more economical and I think it will work better for me. Worst case scenario I will just return it and try a different one.
